New 4 stroke EFI 150 mercury?

Thinking of buying a new 150 merc. Anyone have one? Good, bad? Like the low maintainance aspect of the motor especially. Price is nice too. Less than 10g's. Good warranty... So what is the scoop on these bad boys. I want one, tired of the compressors etc on the opti's. I use this boat in the remote areas of the everglades, so reliability is critical.

Friend has mounted a couple on different boats. One was on a boat with a worn out 2.5 200. The 150 pushes it almost as fast!

Thanks for the response Todd. I have heard nothing but good things. Seems like the way to go mid range power wise. Big 3 liter displacement is gonna give loads of torque.

We have a lot of them running over here and they have been very reliable. They tend to vibrate a little in gear at idle with a three blade prop so we try and use a 4 blade when we can. Other than that we have had no complaints.

More good info, thanks samari. Was kinda looking at the 175 pro xs until I heard so much praise being heaped on this motor by my dealer. Fuel economy seems to be incredible also! Strange how a prop can make a change in vibration at idle. But 4 blade props are much smoother all around.

you'll find the 175 xs is simular to my 200xs. the measured fuel usage on a voyager with 200 xs is 7.4 max. the 4 cycle will just match that if at all. plus the 4cyc is heaver.

Do you mean 7.4 gph or mpg? The 150 4 S is getting nearly 8 mpg at a 25 mph/3000 rpm cruise. That's on a 1500#18' vee hull type boat as tested by some fishing magazine. A friends 18' egret flats boat with a 175 opti is getting about 6 mpg at the same cruise speed and rpm's. Which is real good. But, the lack of a compressor is darn near enough to make me switch anyway....Weight diff is only 23#'s. So that is not much of a problem.

Great motor...we've got lots of them on the water and they seem to be very tough. Good power too.

All they have to do is add 2 more cylinders and you have a 4.5L 6-banger putting out 225 hp with no changes needed (150 hp divided by 3.0 liters equals 50 hp per liter. 50 hp per liter times 4.5 liters equals 225 hp.)

Add variable camshafts and a bit of tuning to make a 225 hp 4.5L 6-inline engine into a 250. Add a supercharger to it and you could have a 300 and 325 hp version. All for much lower manufacturing costs than producing a Verado

Thanks Superbender. No bad stuff yet! Merc engineers must be proud they made this thing so dependable and strong running.

Looks like they already did, but laid it down.
