mercury oil injection
I have an 2001 Mercury 200L efi
Serial # OT304296
Should I remove the oil injection and just mix the gas?? I have read about the plastic gear shearing and worry that I am on borrowed time with the age of the motor. I have had no problems with the motor in the 4 years I have owned it.

A lot depends on how you use your boat. High rpms will kill the gear. If you are running it easy, in which case I cannot imagine you being on S&F, you should be fine. You are correct in that the gear is plastic and does fail but I have seen many non hotrodded motors do just fine. I personally remove the injection as I then know for sure how much oil is in my fuel mix. Welcome to the site and I hope this helps.

For $15 bucks your oiling worries will be gone.

I would ditch it. i find it easier also to pre mix over filling the jug in the boat and worrying about spillage in the bilge. It also makes it lighter and removes junk from around your intake for better air flow. i wouldn't trust any oil injection system. They say the new ones are good but I would rather premix them also If ya can.

Funny thing all the ones we delete at work when fired up after need a water pump. Heat kills the gear faster than anything.

the magic number is to keep the rpms under 6200. above that # the plastic is bound to break. this applies to the plastic crank retainer on the main bearings. for removing the oil system, be sure its a oil mixer system and not the injector. for a host of reasons the injector must not be removed.

I still have oil injection on my 225 Pro Max and consistently run 65-6600 rpm, but has never been overheated. It will be coming off soon cuz I just don't trust the plastic gear.
I normally remove oil injection off every thing I own as soon as I get it, this boat was my dads and he wanted oil injection. Now that its mine it will be gone. I know if I mix the fuel will never have to worry.
I pre mix all my other 2strokes so mixing gas on one more is no big deal and peace of mind.

ProMax is 6750 with some a tad more for whatever reason...oiler parts and function is same as all tha little 2.5 V6's..there's lots n lots of 'em that haven't been mistreated ( over heated mainly) out there still jennin'......every center main bearin' for a 2.5 that I've seen from a 280 on down are in "plastic"..

The other thing people don't understand you idle for 10-15min the VST s full of 90-80 :1 oil mix. Hammer it after idling and your running on idle oil mix till the VST refills.

jus shows ya how a "little" oil goes a long ways long as its for a short period.. seen some of tha actual hard core fishin' guys idle around for long, long periods ta "mark their territory" then hammer tha crap outta tha thing all tha way to tha next "spot".......
Puckett told me a long time ago, like early 90's, some of tha racers were runin' Alisyn at 100 ta 1 but he jus didn't have tha gonads ta try it (me either)......he was also an Alisyn dealer..go figure!Last edited by tlwjkw; 03-27-2015 at 08:13 PM.
