    Neutral safety switch

On my 2002 280, the shift mechanism was twisted down so the plastic slide wasnt touching neutral safety switch, I do want to start in gear tho. With shifter in gear it still started. Unhooked one of the 2 wires and it still started. Is that normal???

Hi Tony. Hope all is well. If you are talking about the 2 yello wires and it will start with one disconnected there is a short elsewhere. Good luck.

If you are refering to the switch that is mounted to the shift bracket on the engine, that is not the neutral safety switch and will not affect starting. Its for ingintion advance when shifting.

The neutral safety switch is in the shifter at the helm and has two yellow/red tracer wires attached to it (coming from the ignition switch/harness) . If the two yellow/red tracer wires wires are disconnected and tied together (on the ignition switch side) this will defeat the neutral sfatey feature.
