It EASILY sucked twice as much fuel so a week or two later I sold the powerhead to Joe at DBR. I only did the swap to see if it would break 110mph... And it didn't. It was the most direct swap or comparison that I could do.
So there is a second real world comparison. What boat did you run both the X and the XS on?

There are guys out there that have Mecury label makers and can make whatever you want.
Ck my motor single trim ram. HD clamp bracket and weighed it. 465lbs versus 500 for an XS.

JEPROG: As far as Jims boat not sure if you mean with the x motors or xs that I had on. We are hooking up in April in the Keys. Guess we will find out. I will say this with the exception of Dales lightweight 28 I will run my 28 against any other 28's out there and not be worried about the outcome. Also anyone setting up a x motor with the same prop that you would use on a 300xs set up due to the HP curve, torque and max RPM is missing the setup by a mile.
Why would you run the same prop when you have another 700 rpm to play with and not mention the x motor makes full HP to 7000 as per DBR's website.
I am really looking forward to running these x's soon and look forward to the outcome whatever that will be.

The XS might be more economical, but they sure don't look or sound as good as the X! Wish Merc would have kept the alien style cowl and mid on the 3.2L.

The more I'm thinking about Big Johnson's picture, the harder it is for me to believe that a 2004 300X with an Offshore Clamp Bracket and Mid is 39 pounds heavier than the exact same 300X motor with a Bass Clamp and Mid. 40lbs is a lot of extra metal here, there and every where IMHO.

What gear ratios get the best top speed on a twin engine boat with xs motors? 1.62 or 1.75?
One would assume that 1.75 will require larger wheels?

I have 1.62 gears on my 25 Liberator and have no problem putting 34" x 15" cleavers on the limiters. 1.75 gears are for fishin boats!

Offshore single ram clamp brackets are heavier than 3 ram mids, also - im pretty sure ONLY Offshore models were offered from the factory with Sportmasters ( which are also way heavier than a torquemaster ). The exhaust housing is the same for either. So this would explain the " mercury tag" weight difference.

Both are damn good motors- the X can ultimately make more power if your willing to spend the extra money and take the risk. For my style of boating which would be similar to endurance running ( hundreds of miles per day ), the fuel consumption, high torque and warranty work better for me.

I was asking about the X motors (if you had run with Jim).

I had both on my Velocity, ran same set up and the X was about 4 to 5 mph faster using 40% more fuel, then I added the DBR kit to the XS and then ran exact same numbers. I feel that the X still was the King.

What year was the 300X and were both the X and the XS Opti Offshore clamp and mid or were they both Bass with 3 ram trim?

2001 and 2002 were the best years for the X. 2001 was the first year and Mercury wanted to make a statement so they made sure it was a winner! Had a few.....JMPO
