What ya all think ?13 ft Checkmate with a jet set up ?? About to go pick her up.

As if we do not have enough projects, it was super hard to pass this one up, lol.. So much work was done, its so close to being complete it was a no brainer for Dad and myself.. This boat started life as a out board.. The owner decided to make a jet out of it, set it up with a small block chevy.. He lost interest with it, some how we are coming to be the new owners of it.. Boat has been deck off restored.. All new full length stringers, transom, glass work, new pump internals, new custom ride plate, shoe. All new wiring( 75%), new gauges, steering wheel ect, engine plates plus more, on a new redone trailer.. All fresh red gel coat, black gel in the bilge. Lots of time went into this.. I found some pics on the web of it from years past progress pictures, the owner just lost interest in it. I hope that it will be able to swallow up the sbc we have for this.. Prob going to get aluminum heads on it, be in the 400-425 hp range.. Should be a wild ride, look forward to it.. Boat had a early early v4 hanging on it, so hopefully with the engine being further up in the boat it will distribute the weight good enough it doesn't sit with water over the transom, lol. Its it own breed so I guess we shall see soon.. BTW I am a new guy here.. Be easy on me.. Been into performance boats most of my life from when i was a kid.. So not new into the speed world.. Thanks all

Cool project John and welcome to S&F. Looks like most of the hard work is done already. The big roost and the sound of a small block coming from a 13 ft boat will be awesome

Welcome, great little boat. The Edlebrock Aluminum vortec heads small port with a COMP roller marine half inch lift , nothing too big at all with those heads and RPM vortec intake also Edlebrock will get you to those numbers easy. I run those heads in a heavy Chevy truck with flat tops and 10.75 cr on 93 with 34* no issues . I'll make that plastic fantastic ride.

Thanks for the compliments.. Its funny you say vortec heads. Was actually thinking of those, along with a comp 280 or 290 cam, roller rockers along with a good intake edy carb.. Not sure if they would choke the 400 though..The engine is a 400 sbc ( gm pink rods and flat tops) Just hoping it will not sink the boat lol.. Have a A impeller so hope it will be able to twist it..

You will 100% make that power, you would do it only 350 c.i. , the small port Al Vortec heads are super. At 400 c.i. your getting near the upper size for the small port version. Small tube headers as well. I know of a great COMP roller , don't have the number off hand , easy 420 hp. and super low end as well. Those heads in stock GM iron form with dished slugs and same sized cam have done 400+ proven recipe on the dyno. The Al. Edelbrock version goes way better throughout the rpm range without the ping. They are a bit $ but worth it. The Big port version makes way more but you don't really need it. FACT COMP XM 270HR , XM 276 HR . The XM 270HR will do it, the 276 will do it some more.

We want to keep this on a budget.. So the big $$$ edy heads are out.. Im thinking even if the cam is a little on the bif size for the heads it will def utilize them to the fullest lol. Unless we come across a set of better flowing heads for cheap, it will prob receive the vortecs. Not looking to spin this much over 5k.. Can't wait to go get it in the next week or so.. Would love to have a 327 for it but the 400sbc deal kinda fell into my lap lol..

The iron vortec has two small port versions, one with seats, one without .The 1/2 ton version is without, 3/4 ton with. The 1/2 ton version flows a little better stock. GMPP has a few different version from bone stock to big port all iron and very good. Beware of the CHINA knock off version , I was told they crack the exhaust . The small port 1/2 ton version with a little work .

Thanks for the link.. Just found some steel ones for 100$.. I am going to have to keep the chambers about 70cc, to keep the compression under 11-1 though..

Can you say sprint boat. ....

Id run a scott or Kodiak pump. And a 400+ hp SBC oughta be good for 70+and hang on. That is basically what sprint boats use hull wise so honestly should run similar

The JG with drop snout will be to long causing handling issues. Change to a comp scott pump. Those boats work better without the pressure pump

also lose the intake tracking fins will turn way harder before air induction if they are gone. The v dead rise will keep your track. They aren't needed

Needs a bit of hull work yet. Delta the V and create a spoon to the intake so water is u disturbed by air. From hull at all angles. And be ready to hang on.

We are going to see how it goes for now.. Swapping pumps and such can always be had down the road.. Always room for improvement, but right this min just looking to stay in the budget.. As for cutting back into the hull, dunno about all that.. It has been re gel coated, obviously not looking to do more glass work.. Have already contemplated trimming the rails off the grate for a ease of handling.. Maybe try to take a small portion off at a time.. I almost had a idea of stuffing a LS in there. I happen to have the one i pulled out of my truck a few years back in order to drop the 6.0 ls that is in the 4.8's place. Also have a decent cam for the 4.8 aswell on the shelf.. I just dont know if I want to have and go through the oem harness then go about having the pcm programed/flashed.. Ahh decisions decisions. Don't want to get to far ahead of our selves. Still need to head up to bring it back in the next few days, lol..
