Need to haul a Progression with my Ford Escape , advice needed please
I should be picking up a Progression 24 LD i/o this weekend and I am limited in time to find a proper suited truck for the 5:30 hr drive across mostly flat highway.
I would like to use my wife FORD Escape to do the trip, would you do it ? the boat does not have a motor or drive...
-2009 Ford Escape ,3500lbs rated from FORD 6 speed Auto V6 3.0 4x4 ( no idea if it has a trans oil cooler but I see two lines out of the trans and goes into the top of the A/C rad )
-1989 Progression 24 LD i/o NO ENGINE or DRIVE , hull , interior and the gas tank ... What is your weight guess ? 1800lbs's ??? maybe less ?
- Trailer is a galvanized double axle with good clean bearing and tires , no brakes
Let me know what you guys think this boat weigh's , thanks

If you exceed the towing capacity and get in a accident, your insurance will not cover you. Be careful.

I want to be legit here , that's why I was aksing how much you guy's figure the hull and tank and interior weigh's ... Progression's site states 1600 less power including rigging. If that's correct boat and trailer will not even exceed 3000lbs....

Power wise it should be fine. It's cooling and braking that might be compromised with a heavy load. Given that it is rated for 3500 lbs. from Ford, it should handle the load reasonably well. Of course you should use caution especially in following distances and anticipating others' moves so sudden braking or turning is kept to a minimum.

The tail could wag the dog! If you decide to do it be very careful. Make sure the trailer brakes are working properly.

Or the weight ?

Why not go over to your local Ford service dept, give them your VIN# and they can pull up the build sheet. Then you can see if you have the aux oil cooler etc. I believe they call it the "MVBOM" in the computer.

I wonder what the tongue weight will be without the motor. You should be OK, but if the tongue weight is too much, you will have a lot of sag and possibly light steering in the Escape. Personally, I think if you are asking the question, you may know the answer. If you absolutely cannot find a better tow rig for the day, I think you will be tight, but OK if you leave enough room for braking.

Hey Greg G , I got a confirmation from a friend all 6 speed escape have a trans cooler , It's in the A/C condenser and use the firt 4 inch of the condenser...
Boomer , I use to tow my Checkmate Vision full of gas and beer without any braking issue's or swaying but it was just like a 10 mile drive ... I am more concerned about the trans of the truck then dangers of trailer sway.. The owner says its super well balanced.

I tow my Vegas with an '01 Escape 4X4 with the previous-generation 200hp 3.0L V6. No shortage of power hauling 3000 lbs. I regularly drive 80 mph on the highway with the boat on tow. 253,000 miles and counting, on the original drivetrain.
Keep the off-highway driving to a minimum. Acceleration below converter lockup speeds is where it generates lots of heat in the transmission. See if you can load the boat a little farther back on the trailer to get some weight on the tongue. Use O/D OFF mode if it has one.
I'm a little curious if those new turbo-four-banger Escapes can really tow 3000 lbs. I'd like to upgrade at some point.'89 Hydrostream Vegas XT, '90 Merc 2.4 Bridgeport PCU EFI

Hey Guy's Sorry for the late reply I did not get a notification the topic was still active ... Tow went really well ... Because I didn't take my escape ... My buddy threw me the key's to is truck and I was kind of happy I went with his Rig , might have been a slight over-kill for the job but Looking back the escape would of costed more in gas and in transmission's ... This Boat is wrapped like a Sailboat and pulled with the wind like CRAZY.
Super excited about starting the work on it ! But it will have to wait for some $$$
