1994 Sea Rayder advice would be appriciated

    Hello,
I've been boating for multiple years with my family and I finally decided to purchase my own. So last summer I purchased a 1994 Sea Ray Sea Rayder. I love the boat. It needs to upholstery which isn't a big deal. But the 90 horse engine I don't think is running correctly. At wide open throttle it only does 18 mph.
So I'm debating on if I want to tear it down and go through everything on it. Or should I take it out and have the cylinders bord along with milling the heads? Otherwise I have been thinking if I should swap with a 120 horse motor or go above and beyond and throw a 4 stroke waverunner/jetski motor in it.

Any sugguestions or advice? I know there's not a big market for these boats anymore so I know its going to be tough to sell it how it is already. Any tips at all would be appriciated!

They were very under-powered to begin with. At 18 MPH, it's barely on plane... That can't be right. It may have some excessive wear in the jet pump, and also a possibility of some ignition issues. Get a service manual, check compression, and see what's wrong.

Personally unless you run shallow rivers all the time don't waist any more money on her.! Look into the pump for your issue and thats it then try and sell her and buy an outboard boat. You will be much happier with the performance and makes boating enjoyable like its supost to be. The kids when there older wont want to be going out in her if you cant do anything. Get some real HP boat and have fun!! Ski tube lounge around go fast thats fun! Think long term investment then saving a buck today. For 6-10 grand you can have a very nice boat that does well over 60mph!! Look under hulls under 20ft on hear theres lots!

My parents have a 50 foot house boat on the Mississippi River that we go to a lot. I just like the jet boats cause there not to big and not to small. I like to go into the back waters with it so that why I like the jetboat

The SeaDoo Speedster with the twin engines is the only small jet boat worth owning. You can buy a used one dirt-cheap. All of the little single-engine jets are under-powered, and all of them are unsuitable for skiing. You can pull a flat-bottomed tube behind a Speedster, but a strong wakeboard cut can pull it right down off plane without a huge stab on the throttles, and nobody wants to get slapped by jet wash tail anyway.

I have a 96 Baja splash and had the same problem when I first bought it. Check the ride plate it's probably pushed out from running dry on the trailer. Mine does 45gps on a bad day. Loaded with four generous sized adults it will plane with a little help and once on plane runs 30ish... loads of fun. Like to see an outboard put a smile on a little guy's face with a 180 Lol

Yeas, an engine backfire will screw up the rideplate and then you suck air and not water. SJ90 was a bit underpowered, 120 was a step forward, the SJ175 was fun and strong - Find one and install it, will fit in the same hole - need a pump and a engine to make that swap.

Apparently you're not familiar with "bat turns." More likely to put sh** in your drawers than a smile on your face.
