You don't think engines like the E-Tec will be around in the long term?

I think that evinrude, and Yamaha don't have the tech to bring a higher hp 2 smoke to market that meets emissions. With regular care and feeding, the verados last a very long time, and outperform the 2 smokes at every turn. Reliability, and a warranty go along way when considering a major purchase. Just my 2cents..

It will be very interesting to see how the technology evolves for sure. I've always liked the Verado since the very start, but I also like where Evinrude is taking E-Tec. The more, the better for us all, I think.

the weight of the verado is major for a 250-400hp motor
Nissan just debuted a 1.5litre 3 cylinder motor that makes 400 hp
oooohhhh and it weighs 88 lbs,,,,,,
set that on a lighter mid as the old offshore 2.5s were and u have 400 hp and light

I definitely think that engines will get lighter and power will increase. The 400R is a pretty good illustration of the power potential, at least. It will be interesting.

    not putting down the 400r
they raised the hp on their verado platform
which was heavy and 10+yr old technology
this is what they are selling
and if u want 400 hp merc outboard that's what u have to buy for a new motor
just as the 175hp 2.0litre v6 motor platform started in 1976
and bumped it to 300 hp over a 20yr timeframe
so how long is it going to stay a verado platform and bump the power every few yrs
vrsing using the new technology out here today for a new design
ive raced mercs since 1981 and still run mercs today playing in the ocean
just as omc did and died they kept trying to upgrade their design till it bit them
the performance I/o platform has gotton out of hand on price
just as the o/b has gotten,,,,,now they are selling a cnc prop for 10k to go with the 15" motor on top of the 40k price

the Etec is cleaner than anybodies 4 stroke so I think it will be around for a while longer, designed and built buy a company that makes more engines for more markets than Merc does

I'm also curious how the two-stroke oil will evolve as emissions standards will likely become more strict. The E-Tec is really a remarkable platform, just as OptiMax is. I truly hope these platforms will continue to be developed.

    a 4 stroke is a 4 stroke,,,,,car,boat,snowmobile,ect,,,,,,,,
look at the seven motor platform,,,,small block chevy,,,,adapted to a mid
the Honda 4 stroke o/b that came out 20 yrs ago was from their car line......
getting at is if Nissan can make an 88 lb 4 stroke motor making 400 hp
just have to adapt to a mid as I already stated
thinking out of the box with todays tech
mercury is working old platforms as already stated
verado came out what yr? and just been bumping up the power to 400
just as the 175 to 300
start a new platform and it can be light and powerfull
I also build a lot of drag race motorcycles
and with a 4 cyl hayabusa motor are achieving 800+ hp in prostreet class
so im talking outboards,,,,,,lighter 4 strokes making more than 400hp is achievable
just start with a new design not a motor designed for a heavy fishin boat
if its called a race motor
