Have a customer with a 29' DCB deck boat that was repowered at DCB from 300xs's to 400r's. Full load with fuel etc boat is solid 10-12mph faster than the 300xs's. It was running low 90's and now runs 102. They are working on set up to get to 105 full load.
This is first hand info. Also TNT is running a 30' Skater next week sometime with 400r conversion from 300xs's. We will see how that works as well. I hope to bring my 30 down their to run side by side with it to get real comparisons boat for boat. However i have 300x motors.

This is where these 400Rs will separate themselves from the 2 strokes...grunt to still run a good number no matter the load. It's just a monster of a motor size/weight wise.
Rayzor, is that friend still rigging the Talon with the 400R?I CAN ALWAYS MAKE ANOTHER DOLLAR, BUT I CANNOT MAKE ANOTHER DAY

I could get a DCB Mach22 single 300X to run high 90s with my eyes closed..granted it would be in good air and light fuel load. When they first came out in 98 or so Powerboat magazine tested the one with twin 2.5 S3000s at 125mph with two heavyweight passengers at 500#

Molds are just. About complete on the CLIMAX, Doug Wright 28. The fist two boats will be a good comparison of, One boat being rigged with a single 400 and the second boat twin 300 XS motors, and last twin Big Eights. The 400 motors have really opened our eyes on the Vee bottoms and the Flats boats. As I have stated before never was a big fan of the Verado. It has taken some getting used to and learning the setup. I will say they can turn a huge wheel even with a heavy load.

When the 3.0L came out everybody thought that it was a tank. Now it's seen as being normal size.
Those Verado based motor's have a bunch of heavy junk hanging on them that's not really needed except for wty.
The tune up on them is so mild you cant even tell it's running. Asleep compared to every supercharged motor I ever ran. Those loped at idle and hurt your head just blipping the throttle.
I think I even seen some alignment bar plates being made to do a shorty ...

You've been playing with positive displacement blowers for a few years huh...look forward to your spin on these gentle giants.

look at the power of a 400 to displacement, at the same ratio a 6ltr v8 would be over 900hp
saying that a 1650 QC4V is a bit better than a 400 ROS as well.Last edited by powerabout; 05-03-2016 at 12:43 AM.

Is the 400R detuned or already on the limit?

I'm thinking that technology is finally overcoming emissions handicaps, just like it did with muscle cars.

Key word. Emissions.

The really big issue that concerns me is cost. The newer outboards are getting more and more expensive and pricing themselves out of the reach of more and more boaters.

If people weren't buying them, I don't believe they'd be building them. Everything I've read says stern drive sales are in the dumpster. The market is demanding quieter power that gets better mpg. The govt is demanding tighter and tighter emissions standards. Imo, the entire 2 smoke line will be phased out completely due to them being UNABLE to meet emissions. Embrace the 4 stroke. It's here to stay.
