How can I go faster and get better MPG out of this little go fast boat?

So I have this very cool little boat. It's a 17' round bottom race boat. Called a Beisemeyer. The thing handle like a dream. But the old 1500 I have on the back could use some help. It has perfect even compression on all holes. Very low hours. But it doesn't charge and I can't get a tachometer to work on it. And I can't find anyone local to fix it. So I'm considering upgrading to a newer outboard.

What can I buy for under 3k that will still give me good speed and good MPG? The hull only weighs about 570 pounds.

I thought they stopped making the 2500 in 2011. Mybe it was 2012. Still had to build it yourself if you wanted the Duramax.
Cool boat, prop it. Call Peter Dean at PropCo.

With the current prop it runs 51 mph. But since I don't know how many RPMs I am pushing I don't like to run it that hard. When I have 4 adults the boat can barely get on plain. But once it gets up it takes off. The trim is a three button deal mounted in the middle of the boat. Not sure of the logic. Perfect for the guy with three arms. lol

Think I'll buy one of those trim tabs that attaches to the steering wheel.

So you think it is the rectifyer? Is this a tough install?

51MPH doesn't seem fast enough for a 600 lbs boat with a 1500. Trim it out, get a tach, maybe raise the motor then try a new prop. MPG shouldn't be that bad on that light a boat. Maybe it's not set up right, no bottom end grunt.

If you wanted an upgrade you should be able to find a nice 97 150 promax close to $3000. Maybe a little more but should run strong on your hull. An XRI 150 would be sweet also. Theres some 150 vmax motors for sale right now around 3000 also. i would go promax or vMax 150. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1998-150HP-1...f4915a&vxp=mtr

Based on the picture it looks like the prop shaft is at least 12" below bottom. You are dragging a anchor back there. That boat should easily run in the 70's with the right set up with your existing motor . A Jack plate would be a good start , and a good prop. you need to raise that motor up on the transom ,and by doing this will help your speed and gas milage . This would cost you less than $3000K. Those 1500's are strong motors and last a long time. Just keep the distributer contacts clean and it should run a long time, and check all your fuel lines for E damage.

Here is a video of how the boat runs now.

I like the idea of a ride plate. Can this be a mechanical or does it need to be electric? Any suggestions on which one I should get if I am on a budget?

Also need to do something with the trim. Got any good suggestions?

    And last but Most-

Anyone know of anyone near Louisville Kentucky that works on these bad boys?

You don't need an electric jackplate (adds weight, and cost) that boat is light enough that it will come out of the hole fine with a decent prop. I have a few TH Marine Z-Lock (new in the box) that I have never used. Find your best deal on one, cut it by $75.00 and I will ship you one. Hope this will help.
    JPZ-8-DP Z-Lock Manual Jack Plate - 8" Setback
Make sure you get a tach and a water pressure gauge that work and keep going up until you start to loose water pressure without over revving your motor to its death. I love the smile that you couldn't get off your face-its cool when something makes you giddy (you get it set up correctly and the look might change to fear)-

    LOL

Man that inline sounds good. If you decide to replace it I will buy it from you if it's in good shape. Seriously.
