If you have a Merc manual should have a wiring diag in it. If not let me know I can find you one.

    UPDATE:
Alright guys, I removed the control box and grounded all wires that the control box wires were connected to. I also bridged the two bias posts (wht/blk wires). I unplugged the ECM also. I timed the engine via the cranking method and the idle was +2. I adjusted it to +4 just to have it in the middle of the 0-9. Set the Static Maximum Timing to +23. It initially showed +18, but I adjusted it up.

Here is the question: I put it all back together, less the black boxes and ran it with the garden hose. The idle timing showed +8. Why is that? I didn't try max.

Cuz its idling faster on the hose than it will in the water in gear.

BTW idle timing on that motor is 0-9 ATDC or 0- -9. JMO I shoot for 0.

Oh crap! So it should be 0 to -9??? Frick! I better fix that. Once I fix the idle timing, do I need to redo the max also? Thanks so much for saving my motor

Setting idle Timing will not change max timing.

Can't say thanks enough for the hel[p guys. I warmed up the engine and timed it down to -2. Seemed to act the best. I am now trying to figure out why the tach doesn't work. My gray wires are the culprit .... I think.

Have 2 voltage regulators, hook the grey to the other regulator.

You read my mind Dave I was looking over the schematic and realized I grounded one of the gray wires. I will fix that and try the tach to that one. I am looking in my manual for the regulator test procedure. Might as well while I have it opened up....

Only wires you need to ground are black.

Really? I read some of the forum posts on removing the black boxes and the comment was "ground the rest". I'll take a pic and post it. Make it easier for you to QC my work I tried the other gray wire and no luck. Getting my multimeter to start testing.

If you remove the boxs pretty much all the wiring to sensors etc can be removed.,ie: oil injecton detonation sensor etc. Black wire is the only one you want to ground.

Back to the drawing board. I will pull all the wires off the ground that aren't black. Would that have affected my timing?? I will rerun it and check the timing after.

Slow down brother and take a breath. You pulled the timing module right? Do you still have oil injection? If you do now is the time to loose that without the module no way to turn on the warning horn if the gear strips and pump stops turning.
Might need to to start at square one, grounding wires that shouldn't be grounded can cause issues depending on the wire.
Do you have a wiring diagram? , picks of what you have removed? Pics of the wires you grounded?
