A "very good source?" EVERY source would tell you that. The YT hulls made from '86 to '88 were the worst for core issues. If it hasn't been re-cored, it will need it.

Yes , It's a know problem on all early model Hydro Streams ! And any other Balsa Core Boats . One screw intalled in the wrong place and not properly sealed . Water gets in the core , and it's all down hill from there !

I don't understand why all hydrostreams have problems with the cores
People say I'm lazy but it takes all my time

is recore a few thousand $$$, removing floor etc. and then re-glassing all with no rot materials? Where is this water coming from, drain plug sitting in water a long time, no cover and floor getting rained on a lot, transom leaking? where is water getting into core, my boat has had hardly any use and is not all rotted. i have been told to give it the tap test with hammer. so that is next. Cracking next to center pad means soft core? right? what if no cracks period under hull?

I had water coming in through the two anchoring hooks that go through the transom. They were never sealed from the factory and even though the boat was used 2 weeks a year and garaged the other 50. Water oozed in through those hooks, soaked the transom and made its way down to the floor and core.
When I had the boat professionally restored it was discovered that there were two 3' sections behind each front seat that had dry balsa core. There was no resin or matting at all..100% dry and a magnet for water and yes this was from the factory. I realized there were problems when the bottom of the jackplate sunk into the transom. The boat required a full restoration and is now composite nose to tail.(Apricot)

YT's in particular had flaws in the layup process that made them prone to water intrusion. It doesn't matter how clean the boat is. They were often stored outside uncovered before being shipped to dealers on uncovered trailers.

Very interesting info, is that the boat, looks very sharp, similar paint scheme to my HST very very sharp! Please give me an idea how they do it and how much? can they do from top? just removing seats and floor? no flipping upside down and cutting hull.

That also makes sense being sent wet... or stored wet, my boat needs to be checked over very thoroughly when i can get in heated hangar its stored, but i know its an under 50 hour boat, every part of glass is just to mint of shape for much use, espeically transom is like virgin perfect a wet transom would have cracks since this does have a jack. i have owned 7 or 8 fast boats, so i know what is junk vs nice and low hours.
My question is that what they called problems with hulls delaminating? a word i have heard...? and spongey seperation from hull to core?

Yes... When the core is bad, the outer skin will eventually crack. When water pressure enters the crack, the bottom basically explodes, tearing away a big piece of the outer skin.
Do some searches. The YT layup, as well as the re-coring process, has been discussed and documented here many times in great detail.'89 Hydrostream Vegas XT, '90 Merc 2.4 Bridgeport PCU EFI

All 1st generation 'streams are suspect, every single one of them unless it is a comp boat with no core..
