old and new electronics swap over
I have a newer 2003 150hp o ring head 2.5l engine with cdm ignition with a blown cylinder, I also have a 1998 200 2.5l with traditional switch boxes and coils with non oring heads, can the newer igniton be swapped over to older power head as one stlye head uses a non gapped plug on older motor and newer engine uses gapable plug so if I did swap newer igniton with cdms to older 1998 powerhead do I use gapable plug or non gapable plug and is or does carb jetting change, always replace and repair by serial number never tried this, thanks

Great question- I have been considering doing the same on a real sweet '95 XR6 I have- please let us know how this goes if you do this.
I have multipule spares with which I could do this.

the swap will have to include the flywheel
the trigger magnet setup from the cdm style is different
so flywheel, timer base, ignition box and the cdm boxes all together

Great info Ronnie...did not realize the flywheel trigger magnet setups are different. That might catch some by surprise.

i did not get that from your post
they are both CDI ignitions
so gapless sparkplug or ground electrode does not really matter
only the heat range
personally i like to use the ground electrode they seem more resistant to plug fouling
as long as you run the same advance everything stays the same
i am assuming your friend is not trying to run carbs from the 150 on the 200?
check page 71 of the guide!

Ronnie, tha difference is tha cdm ('lectronic) motor has a ecm ('lectronic) on it. that's supposedly tha reason for resistor plug.........I think.

CDM system has only a little control module the size of a pack of cigs- and the CDMs - that is about it- which is why a few of us simple folks likem-

i am assuming we are talking about this engine
because trying to mount the Motorola ecu
from the X and XS engines is going to be a nightmare
and i would not call these CDM units but they have induction ignition
not capacitive discharge
i am pretty sure the only ecu controlled CDM capacitive discharge ignition engines were the 3 liters with 2 ecu,s fuel and ignition
but now i am totally confused about what is getting build on what
i think our mastertech needs to be a bit more clearerLast edited by PanRonnie; 01-28-2015 at 02:44 PM.

Early CDM 2.5s are what Ronnie has the drawing of. They are the first engines with oring heads, EFI and all carb CDM models. Only late model 2.5L EFI engines with electronic oil injection (like the 225X) have the ECM.

not ta worry. without some extensive bracket and/or attachment point fabbin' it ain't gonna happen.......look at it this way also. with tha switch box stuff there's nothin' ta limit how hard ya wanna turn it ...........
