    1708 Glass

When using 1708 glass which side goes down. There is a shinny slick side and a stringy glass side. I am using this on the inside bottom of my boat for a extra strength layer. The wood floor will then go on top and cover it up. Thanks for any help.

The mat side is the rough glass side. As you can tell I am kind of a novice at this. Thank you. I can always use help.

1977 sidewinder spin off. I have cut the floor out and removed the dirt and now is time to test my skills on adding a layer of glass over the existing glass. Previous owner screwed back to back seat down and I have 8 screw hole thru the bottom of the boat. I patched each individual hole and now just putting a layer over all of it. I do not like to swim or paddle if it is not necessary. I do have life jackets in the boat.

Attachment 313690Attachment 313691Attachment 313692These are some pics with the floor removed. I checked the stringer with my drill and it is dry and solid. The transom is the same way. Just need finishing. I want to finish by April.

The mat is your bonding layer to bond the stitched layer.
If your were to add another layer you would put the mat down again.
If your were to add some Woven Roving or stitched cloth with no mat to the 1708 you would need to add a layer of mat first.

Matt is also useful to cover the raw edges of any woven matl used in any lay up. This will add to the shear strength of the panel, making it harder for it tor delaminate from the edge upon an impact. This procedure is called tailing.

I bought some 8oz glass and used that to add a layer on the inside bottom of my boat. I installed 3/4" exterior plywood floor. I only need 1/2 a sheet do to the bottom of my boat is narrow. I have to build a wooden plat form to screw the seat swivels to or I will be like the previous owner and put the screw right thru the bottom of the boat too!!
