yes looking at the manifold where carbs are bolted on you can see 12---- 7/16 bolt heads showing in a vertical line( six on each side )they are what hold reed cages on to manifold ( thats in addition to the 8- 7/16 bolt heads that hold the manifold on to front half)

Thanks for the help, I thought it should be a 7 petal but with all that red rtv I was worried some one already took it off and that it could of been swapped with a 5 petal front half.

I would probably remove the intake and heads to be sure there is no RTV about to invade the internals. If it squeezed to the outside it probably squeezed to the inside. JMO.

in 91 merc used up a lot of parts from 2.4s into the 2.5
some were 7 pedal fronts with the narrow bottom guided rods
some were 5 pedal with top guided rods
    some were fat blocks,,,,,2.4 pistons/sleeves
some had 2.4 cranks in them with special center bearings to make work in 2.5
didn't know what u had till opened them up
as stated if u have 6 bolts in close on each side of the carb throats on the intake it will be 7 pedal reeds
not counting the bolts out wide to bolt intake on

I highly doubt it is, the. 225 was, and all the hi po bridgeport carb motors were only 5 petal.,and they accelerated and top ended way harder than a 200.

again it was a toss up in 91
merc was transferring from 2.4 to 2.5 then and seen lots of crazy miss matchin back then
most were 5 pedal but some were 7 on a 200
any race motor then and now were non painted

I have a 1991 2.5 production black 7 pedal front here on my bench right now
I just bolted on a 1996 block last night,,,,,,,
so here is a factory painted 7 pedal front 2.5 from then

Yea, the motor has a burnt piston so Im not to worried about the internals. It is for sale near me and I need 2) 7 petal front halfs to go on my pair of 1996 blocks that I am building for the boat in my signature picture. I am hoping since the serial number is towards the middle - end of the span of 1991 id # it wont have 2.4 stuff on it. Long as the front on this has the 2.5 larger mains so it will fit on my block the rest will be parted out....RTV and all! lol

Thanks for the help guys! I got some pictures of the adapter plate from the owner and it did have the 6 bolts down each side and was a true 7 petal 2.5 block. I went to look at it yesterday 5 hours away and the complete motor looked like a new one from 1991! The power head was so clean you could eat off of it. The owner told me it was fresh water only and always was kept indoors. He said the motor was on a bass boat and had little hours too. I am going to use the font half on my 1996 - 1999 block and still need one more front half so if any of you guys out there have a 7 petal promax 225 front of another 1991 front to sell let me know due to I need a second for the twin set up. I will be parting out the motor if anybody wants any of the parts minus the front half. I got a adapter plate off of a 240 sport jet for efi so the 7 petal carb adapter I have on this is not needed or the whm carbs. I will be taking it apart tonight and can send pics and will list the stuff in the parts section as soon as I can get pics. Love to trade the 7 petal carb adapter for a 7 petal efi adapter plate if some one is willing too. Again thanks for the help guys!

I have read that about them up here, I was expecting it to be bottom guided but I guess it is a crap shoot on the other parts 2.4 or 2.5. If it has the 2.4 sleeves in it, that will this make it a "fat block" or is that just on the 150's & 175's? Also if it has the 2.4 crank in it, I guess it will have special mains bearings to make it work on the 2.5 style block? I know the old 7 petal 2.4 fronts wont fit but this one should if I read right? I didn't get it apart last night but will tonight and will let yall know what I find in side of it. Its a clean motor minus the rtv where the owner pulled the plate to clean the carbs and also the heads where he inspected the bores. Guess he was trying to reuse the gaskets? Crank case has never been split or in to. Here is some pictures:

Yea, got a point there. Being it was sold as a 2.5 it kinda has to be a 3.5 bore. Well tonight we will see if it is bottom guided and has the 5250's. Boat parts. net shows both rods possible for that year span by looking up my serial number.

Edit: Pulled the front adapter plate off last night and it has the 636-8118's in it, The rtv was coated over the whole gasket surface on the one side of it and was a mess but got that and the gasket off and the reeds and plate + front half look like new! Got lucky on this one and ended up with some good parts for my build, just need to find another 7- petal front and then I will be in business.
