    15' Allison Rebuild

Have aquired an early 80's Allison 15r to rebuild. She's in really bad shape, but going through with it anyway.

All wood is ROTTEN big time, and a previous owner attemped to repair the transom by cutting off large section of outer skin, removing wood, replacing skin (terrible job) and pouring the transon full of resin, no cloth, mat, NOTHING.

Once resin was exposed, I hit it once w/ a 5 lb hammer & it shattered like glass.
Have gotten this out, and removed what seems to be 3-4 layers of paint along w/ a layer of green epoxy primer on the outside of the entire boat. (damn what a mess). Someone had also added what looks lik a gallon of bondo on the pad to widen it out to 8-9". Got that mess off. All gelcoat on entire bottom is full of cracks & blisters. Deck is not much better, but not quite as bad.

Currently building a cradle to support boat before I separate hull & deck. Going to be a long drawn-out process, and will post updates & pictures as I go.

    Update,

Got boat upside down to get some more of the epoxy primer off (and major sanding before I start separating the deck & Hull)
Attached Pics ( quality not too good) show how bad gelcoat is on bottom. Can Someone (Ginger or Tunnels) give me some direction on how to plan for this ? Sand all gelcoat off ? recoat w/ Poly gelcoat, or epoxy and paint. Suggestions & help are greatly appreciated.

Just a suggestion and that is ............................. Before all else I would focus on doing all repairs on the bottom of the hull , cracks , etc , and are you going to re- do the pad again ? Just Curious .................

Will do all structural repairs first. will return pad shape to original 6" wide. Just looking forward. Don't want to put a lot of time in bottom repairs if I am going to need to sand off all gelcoat.

First off are you planning on leaving the boat in the water for long periods of time , hours , days , or weeks ?

Thorn , personally I prefer paint opposed to Gel because Gel is way to much work ( although very durable ) and to tell you the truth I would not sand all the Gel coat off to bare glass unless you deem it absolutely necessary for some odd reason other then doing your repairs , prepping the bottom by sanding the surface , Prime the surface ( suggestion ) using Duratec's - high build white primer -714-002 sand - long board - etc , Paint ( suggestion ) using Imron made by Dupont or .......................................

    Thanks for the input.
My reason for sanding the gelcoat off is it's all alligator skinned on the entire bottom & a lot of the deck.

Just don't want to put a lot of time into it & the cracking comes back.

I would remove all the old damaged material down to the original gell and glass surface. Do the glass repairs next, Then apply one layer of 6 oz. cloth with epoxy resin over the entire surface for a stable base to primer and paint over. jm 2cts.

    thanks Xtream;

If you zoom in on the pic in # 2, you can see just how bad the white gelcoat is. Looks like the build sequence was white then blue for the accents.

Almost finished w/ the cradle to set the boat in to shart major repairs.

Q ? Will the paint be as durable as gelcoat over the long haul ?. I don't mind the sanding of new gelcoat if it will hold up / last longer.

Have done quite a few transoms & floors, so the structural stuff I'm ok with. It's not having experience on a full hull recoat that concerns me.

This part will be quite a ways down the road as I have major srtuctural issues inside to tackle before I start to make it pretty.

Just like to plan as far ahead as I can.

As ginger said above, imron is pretty tough. Duratec primer is a good base too. Gell cote will hold up to the keel rollers, bunks, and bow stop where paint will rub off eventually. I myself like gell for the hull and paint for the deck.

The base, original gell is spider webbed all the way to the glass lay-up.
Looks like this baby sat in the mud for a long time.
Trying to keep the boat as light as i can, so that is the reason for removing all the gel. I have seen several posts stating that the crazing/cracking will come back soon if not either covered (as you recommended, ) or remove it all & reapply new gel.

All comments & suggestions are greatly appreciated.
