    Johnson RS V6

What was the horsepower rating for the Johnson RS V6? What is the differance between the RS and the V6 Stinger GP. Also, what does GP and RS stand for?

The V6 Stinger GP was the original V6 test/prototype model with powerhead on a KR-15 midsection(racing V4)also special gear ratio in lower unit ,The RS & CCC had the more
streamlined midsection and better gear ratio after the KR-15 mid served it's purpose.

I never heard the name V6 Stinger GP name used in Europe the name Stinger came out in 1974 for the Johnson V4 and the Johnson 3cyl engine. This picture shows the 1974 stinger jacket that all the teams had.

I have a picture of the RS Johnson taken in 1978 at the Amsterdam 3hr grand prix. The picture of the no 7 boat was taken in 1976 with the Johnson Hiline 2.0 litre V6 engine fitted which used the V4 centre section and gearcase running a 15/17 gear ratio. When we first started racing the RS Johnson engine the 15/17 gear ratio lower units didn`t last very long so we used 16/18 gear ratios instead they lasted a little longer. The strange thing was when the RS engines first came out we used the same Props as we used on the 2.0litre Hiline engines.

Never heard the term "Hiline" used in association with these motors before. Was that something specific to UK?

At the OMC factory plant in Brugge Belgium the racing division that's the term they used, .Cees Velden changed camps from Mercury to OMC in early 1975 and the first thing he did was to have 2 inch taken out of the centre section and shortened the drive shaft on his engine.I thought this was a good idea but the factory didn`t` maybe if they had to drive the outfit they would have a change of mind. You only had to look at the balance of the Mercury 2.0 litre engine and their outfits handled much better.Have posted 2 pictures of the same outfit with a hiline engine fitted and the later RS engine fitted to the same outfit.

I'm still running the RS, now using a '84 2.6 block, and Rich is running a true CCC complete with the bottom crank balancer. This is badge'd as a CCC. Not many realize the CCC and RS cover are a bit different. When I was running the Wilbur Weeks dual plug heads, I needed the RS straight-top cover to clear the dual coils. Fortunately I started with a NOS gearcase, and I change the fluid every event.
    Still a potent powerplant!
