If this motor is a 280, the compression numbers if "healthy" are lower than one would expect them to be.

    Really?

Please provide the basis of your "healthy" input. If you shave the heads you can achieve 145 to 150 compression is to shave the heads. The stock compression is 110 to 135. 135 being a brand new motor.

Have a nice Christmas.........the basis is on 2 healthy 280's, one mine, one my sons, and neither had the heads shaved. Do you have any leak down numbers on it?

Again I had a 2004 280 and several people I know compression stock is usually 145 to 150. 110 to 120 are usually on 3 liter or older merc. All my 260s where 138 to 145 . Again maybe I'm wrong

When we go through tech at the races, all of the S-Class boats read 135 to 140. This is using the same gauge on all of the motors with the throttle plate open. We all run stock 280s that are kept fresh.

My BONE STOCK 2005 280 had even 150 psi on all holes using a MAC TOOLS comp gauge. It had less than 50 hrs on it before I sold it. Motor still looks good and I would love to have another. The price ain't bad even if it is a little wore out. I wish I had the money. I need another one.
The evidence of poor quality lingers much longer than the success of meeting a budget.

Thanks very much for that clarification. Exactly what I would expect boats having been gone through and ready for a race. This being a 10 year old $25000 head unit 130+ with no issues is pretty darn good in my book. Motor starts every time with just the bump on the key.

    Have a Merry Christmas

I'd bet on gauge not being accurate. Bet if it was checked with another gauge the numbers would be better. Seen too much variation between gauges. A leak down would tell the story for sure.

    I agree with Michael.
Have a leak down performed by your mechanic, that's the only way to know the true condition of the engine.
