    T2X timing belt

    I know dumb questions are my specialty, but does anyone want to share the part number for the original Merc timing belt for the T2X? I don't see it on the published Bill of materials from Merc.

    Thanks

    ADI will be my new friend if I ever get around to rigging 6 carbs on the front of one of my 1500 blocks.

    Id run a belt if it were available... I cannot believe someone cannot cross it with something else, or someone aftermarket does not make a run.

    Heck Id pay $100 for a new belt to run. I bet others would too..

    I wonder how many t2/t2x's are in good enough shape to run around the country? Probably a small list

    You are right, but there is no replacement belt ... Merc's cog pitch is non-standard for both the regular belt and the longer T-2 belts, so Merc is the only source ... apparently they only made a few dozen spare belts and they are all long gone.

    If you guys want to get those motors running you will have to think "outside the box". You will have to find a creative machinist to make up alternative drive pulleys to fit a currently available belt.

    Here's an old thread on the same sad subject, with some belt dimension calculations:

    Did Droll ever get a non-stock pulley/belt to work on his?

    I cannot remember if he was successful?

    Speaking of timing belts I had an issue with timing belts on my 44ci 50 SD motor in 1974&75. On the Thunderbolt ignition motors the only way to set timing was with the motor running with a timing light. While doing this I found every belt I tried had slack in it. This made it impossible to accurately set the Ignition timing. I wound up with a timing arc instead of a point. This had not been a problem on my earlier magneto and Thunderbolt 50s. Any of you guys know why this happened? It took some creative machine work to correct this problem.

    Ed ;
    I don't remember the pitch I used , I'll dig out some old notes and follow up . Its been a while since I did this . Keep your thoughts clear when you broach the keyway for the dist . pulley or press the pulley on the hub ...... rotor phasing / indexing . It will work fine .

    ...XL pitch 5.08
