Why would mercury send a "race motor" with less power than is available to the consumer??

Because the Fazza team and all other RICH Race teams over there who spend money with them asked them to!!!!
They were also the ones that kept the 2.5 alive by ordering 20 plus motors at time.

    This .. ^^^

To go out and buy a pair of new 300 hp motors costs .. what .. ? $40,000 +

For that kind of money , I'd never get runnin ... and they on the other hand will never cater to guys like me who cant or wont spend that much money on an outboard. The one who feels it the most, is the dealer. He see's us look , but knows that sticker shock will drive us away and there is nothing he can do about it.
I've had pretty good luck with my floor sweepin's ( sausage motor) Old stuff that no one wants any more , along with some home made parts ....

You hit it right on the head Ron, they're the only ones spending $$$ on further development of high performance outboards. Those are obviously prototype setups that may never even see production. At 660lbs, I'll never buy one. Everybody better just remain happy with the 300XS, as I think that's the best we're going to continue to have available to us for a while longer. I don't see Mercury spending the $$$ in development costs for a new lightweight, warrantied, high hp consumer outboard engine. I could be wrong, but like I continually say, this ****'s been going on for over a decade now!

    Thanks for sharing the pics!

Speaking of a lower unit, I like the relief holes and I think I will give it a try

Why dont they just use a sterndrive as they seem to be in love with heavy 4 strokes?
Or compromise and put some 557's on the back?

You would think with modern materials/design they could that and more from somewhere else. Lighter but stronger is happening in every other form of motorsport.

Made by Mercury Racing derived from the stock Verado ones. 4 strokes, supercharged (not turbocharged, it's actually a blower), downgraded from 350 to 300 HP, weighing 300 Kgs as compared to the previous 170. So the minimum weight of the boats with these units has by rules been raised by a total of 260 Kg accordingly.
They rev up to approx 7300 rpm as compared to the previous 8000 (two strokes always rev higher)
Fazza 3 will mount the first two units for the whole weekend, including the race, although they won't get any points for the championship (which they won already).
Other teams have the chance to test the Fazza 3 boat, out of the official practice sessions. They are still prototype engines and the rules for 2015 may vary a bit.
Every team has the choice to use the props they prefer.

Soooo, the way I see this is that, it is a Verado 350 detunned to 300hp, that still weight like a Verado 350 (660lbs). mounted on a short mid with a Sport Master, right? Are we missing something here??? Hmmmm, and how long took them to create this? I think they could have done this long ago. From what I’ve read is that performance wise the Verado 350 compares straight to the Opti 300XS, so I guess this new Frankenstein Verado 300 would perform like a 250XS??? I guess, Dale you’re right the 300XS is the one to have and enjoy while it last. You, Justin and Adam perhaps have the coolest 300XS’s being short mids.
I think that if Merc would have built the 300XS with an option for a 15” mid version would have sold way many more than they have, just saying.
Let’s hope it would kick A$$ in Dubai.
