I reckon a old BMW F1 4 cyl turbo has a pretty good power to weight ratio and that block was cast iron ( but maybe no go down low?)
I think if the f1 boat world goes 4 stroke they will need to be supercharged so they have some guts, cant see the class lasting like that though?
Trying to force change in such a small class due to emissions is a bit of a joke when you compare that with all other forms of motorsport that have no rules in that area

A Porsche 3.8 GT3RS engine weighs in at approx. 450# and produces in excess of 475HP..and normally aspirated...That is "lightweight" relatively speaking for "car motors". I was just stating that "boat engines" are behind the times in power to weight ratios.

Sorry
I dont get the " there is more left without them"
And yes very hard to beat a performance 2 stroke on a boat with anything else and there are people proving that right now.

I think this is absolute sh*t from Mercury! They should know that two stroke is the way to go for light powerful and efficient outboards. Heavier engines=bigger boats=even heavier engines=even bigger boats/4 stroke =complicated=more service more fuel more emissions etc. This is the wrong way to go!!!
Hey Mercury, it seems like you need help real bad - send me PM and I'll see what I can do...Last edited by aeneas; 12-22-2014 at 05:29 PM.

its funny how cars are getting lighter more powerful engines and outboards are doing the opposite!
overheard at a boat dealer..
" Sir you can have your new boat in either outboard or sterndrive, they are the same weight and perform the same, just a cosmetic choice these days I'm afraid"Last edited by powerabout; 12-22-2014 at 05:36 PM.

All the OB manufacturers see the emission standards as a way to increase revenues. Their target market is larger boats paid for with financing. That's why most advertising is done by boat dealers. The little guys that want to pay cash aren't on the radar anymore. Even with the new Evinrudes you have to pay for built-in hydraulic steering etc....adds cost and eliminates the current market. I think you also pay fat for the warranties and lose performance options (rev limiters) in the process. Someone will eventually capitalize on the void in the market. We might get surprised. Believe it or not, people in marketing monitor blogs like this.

I thought that 4strokes were brought to the front for emission(green) reasons----- I guess direct injection 2strokes have changed that faliacy! Gary
