Base gasket burned away around exhaust outlets
I knew this gasket was leaking... Oily residue under cowl, and visible exhaust coming from under the back of the powerhead. When I pulled the powerhead to re-build, this is what I found. Is this supposed to be happening? Did I use the wrong gaskets, or were they just poor quality? It's been 9 years since I mounted this powerhead. Do they normally burn away after awhile? It's been a long time... What's the correct part numbers for these base/pan gaskets?
Wtf?

That is actually the wrong gasket. The base gasket for that pan is a metal reinforced gasket and has the same shape. Pro sell them and you will need 2 of them.

My bridgeport does the same thing. The metal plate that mounts the cowl to the mid gets real hot at the exhaust and wont distribute heat like aluminum does. Better gaskets help.

James is correct!!! The mercury Pt# is
9 27-8231422 GASKET,EXHAUST PLATE 27-78069 2 $55.00 $50.88 2 <input type="text" size="4" name="8231422x10" style="font-size: 10px;">
The one you have pictured Chad is nothing but standard Garlock gasket material and is not made to withstand the heat.

X3 on the better gaskets!!! Only ones to use when sitting under the power head! Another place I would not use those green ones is on the exhaust divider!.....

Chad, is that a two piece plate? Looks like a gasket mismatch on the front side.Maybe just my old eyes. Those outlets look like the small ones.I think the BP PH is bigger.---Oh X4 on the metal gaskets.

Thanks guys!!!
Those substandard gaskets lived for over 6 boating seasons before they finally burned through. I'm sure this was the reason my motor seemed a little down on power in recent years. It's been breathing its own farts.

I also use the aviation gasket sealer on all of mine. Some say yes, use it, some say not needed. Instructor at merc school said will not hurt, and should make gaskets seal better over the long run. I'm not talking goober it on, just a thin coating on both sides of the gaskets. The metal cowl mount plate that is sandwiched in between is kinda prone to warping and allowing leaks. jm2cts
