Fill Drain Super Speedster Lower unit

There are two plugs on my Super Speedmaster. (not pictured) What is the proper way to fill/drain one of these ?

How do you know you got fresh oil down low?

If you happen to have water seepage how do you get it out of the bottom of the lower unit?

    Thanks
    Conrad

I alway's tipped mine upside down leaning to port, then filled the bottom hole slowly till oil comes out of top hole. When the flow almost stops,is when you need to look for metal under a good light.

I drilled a hole and tapped a 1/16 pipe plug in mine to drain it. To fill you fill from hole #2 until it comes out hole #1 as per your pic. Dick.

Does that push all the way thru the system pushing old oil out?

Im guessing it is pushing in one pinion driveshaft cavity and then up and out the other driveshaft cavity.

Sounds like the only way to get it all out is take it off the motor and tip it upside down. Or tap a plug hole. Dick do you have picture of where you tapped yours?
    Thanks

No picture, sorry. You are right, the things don't push out the old oil. You need to drain it. Dick.

In all the years I've been running speedmasters I wonder whats layin in the bottom of the case. I don't run them a lot but I do lay them over to try and get all the lube out. I made up a vent kit to fit the older SSM's and it fits under my XS cowling so that might be helping also? I haven't had to clean out any water or metal out of one in a while now.
