Help with finding a 20' and under Runabout Classic Glass
All, looking at options to add or replace my center console. I have been completely bitten by the speed and now looking for more
Requirements: Must be able to handle rough water and big chop on Lake Erie/ Sandusky Bay, OH
Sport runabout/ Ski boat/ Classic style.
Speed in excess of 60+
Can be Inboard/Outboard or Single Outboard
Pre owned price range up to $9K
I'm looking at classic glass models:
16' Donzi Sweet Sixteen
18' Donzi 2+3
18-21' Checkmate Starflight/Starliner
Four Winns U-17
Wellcraft V20 Nova Outboard or Inboard Sport model
Chris Craft Xk-19 or Commander SS, might be out of my price range
Open to any options or recommendations. I'm not really looking for any project boats or fixer uppers. I can handle cosmetic hull buffing and cleaning.
Currently running an 85' Hobie Powerskiff with a 90' Two Stroke Yamaha. That little Center Console "Flies". I can sustain 52mph in Flat water, Buckeye Lake,OH, and briefly touch 55mph , depending on the sea-state. New SS prop coming in the spring Would like to reduce blowout in the corners and gain more top end.
Thanks for any replies and looking.Last edited by Carusoracer; 11-09-2014 at 09:33 PM.

Any particular years to look for in the checkmate's or Donzi's?
Any other opinions out there?
Thanks!

If you are going to run Erie, you will want something with a little size. With your price range I would look to a 21-22' outboard. Maybe a 21' Checkmate Pulsare or a Superboat. Something along the lines of a single engine deep V. Donzi's are probably going to be out of your price range. they tend to hold a great resale value. Just my opinion.

Thanks largecar91. I have seen Donzi's in that price range but they tend to need work. I agree.
i have not seen a Superboat, I'll have to check it out. The deep V outboard concept does seem to be practical. I have been on Lake Erie for years and really have seen some rough weather, especially with how quickly the chop and waves can build.

I also ran across some great old brochures of the 72'-75' Wellcraft V20 Nova. The boat had options for twin i/o or twin outboards. What is the general consensus of these sport boats. Looks like the exact type of old classic boat I'm looking for? Fast, nice lines, versatile that can handle some rough water?

I'm not familiar with Superboat would this be another viable option?
