allison bottom question
what is the difference in the xr-2001 drag bottom design (pre 1996) vs. (current)? Is it the size of the lip, design, pad, etc?

There's quite a bit of difference. Dead rise, setback, etc. It's totally different. New bottoms tend to be easier to drive and a little more forgiving

Depends on what you want out of it, 99% of the allisons running around the country are fast off the showroom floor, the new style bottom design is just as fast but a little easier to drive in certain situations ( motor/setup/etc...)
if you want to drag race 800' or 1/4 mile then thats a different story, any allison can compete but there are only a handful around that have the extreme bottom modifications to run up front every week ( thats a big difference in heads up racing) and its not cheap.
so if you want to hit the track and race then setup and bottom mods are a must, if you want to play around the sanbars then its not that big of deal what style you have....
and of course whats on the back and gearcase design/ prop selection is a major factor..........but if you have a fast boat to start with it makes everything else alot easier..

What is the factory lip measurement on the older model hulls? Mine is at .61 thousandths. debating to knock it down a bit or not.

The 2001 and newer XR-2001's have basically the same bottom as the SS-2000. The pad is narrower is the main difference.

Just curious, what is the width of the new pad. I'm at 9" and the roll tapers down towards the outside edges.

I'm not sure on the width. .061 and tapers off on the edges sounds about right (standard) on your pad.

I know of several stock untouched new bottom boats that are winning in DSRA /ODBA. No bottom work needed IMO.

The older drags were a deeper molded depth and steeper deadrise .. New ones a little flatter

thanks for the all the info. mine is a 93 and runs like the one in the pic with the merc. Just playing with setup, boat feels loose, just doesn't air out as much as I thought it would. had a 88 xr 2002 that lifted a lot more but never looked at the bottom on it(had it years ago)

What you're describing is what I'd expect out of the hull you have.
This boat was a 93 with a lip like yours and was very quick early on and loose on top. Couldn't run much higher than about 1/2" above or it'd turn around getting out of the gas

I have a 2014 drag with no bottom work and it will hold its on with any gas boat that races now day's.IV never had the bottom touched on either of my alli drag boats and both have been very competitive. Bottom work isn't going to turn a middle of the pack boat into a winner.
