Merc 200 XS LU Metal Shaving

I have a Gen 2 2012 Mercury 200XS with a 2:1 Sporty with about 40 hours. Motor is on a 23 ft batboat which is raced offshore.

Upon changing the gear oil after 2 races and several practise sessions about 15 hours total use, these metal shavings were found on the magnet. Is this normal or could there be cause for concern? I was using the new Mercury Racing gear oil.

Does something like this usually happen with just roughly 40 hours of use from brand new?

Make sure the shifter is putting the lower into fwd all the way. Could be one possible cause for this.

That is excessive. Hard to tell from the pic but is it dark grey chunky and real shiny flaky? Dark and chunky would be gears. Polished shiny and flaky bearing material or propshaft/carrier bearing wear.
