Merc v6 - Holes in exhaust can - why?
G'day everyone. My Laser 220 started making a lot of noise from it's exhaust reliefs at the top of the mid a while back. I pulled the mid apart, but all seals the looked fine. The exhaust can has holes drilled in it for some reason (stock or not?). They allow it to constantly vent exhaust into the mid, then out thru the relief holes. Is this normal?
I've got no idea what could have changed during that run across the lake to make the motor noisy all of a sudden - any ideas? It still runs the same. Should I plug these holes in the exhaust can? What would you do, S&F gurus?
Cheers!

The holes in that can are not stock but they should not make it much louder at idle IMO. I wouldn't plug the idle relief holes, it might stall at idle. I don't have an answer for the sudden louder noise. I take it that the tuner is in there and not loose, broken, etc?

If you pull the can out it'll make your mid section run much hotter. Which will leave it crusty and ashy looking....

Didnt do anything to mine. Painted it when I cut the holes in the bottom and took out the inner can. 25 hours later , most of it at 7200 and and an occasional wipedown with simple green when I wash the boat and you cant even tell its been run without a liner. Not that loud either really. Certainly not at idle.

I've done some reading up in here and kinda struggle to see how you can gain anything but noise from removing the exhaust can/liner... Heat into the mid (and paint), heat onto the waterpump, probably more noise out of the upper and lower reliefs, even without drilling the mid. I love the sound of a hypo merc screaming but mine is far from a bridgeport or 280... or am I missing something? Seems like the can/liner does no harm at all to me?

I don't know.. I kind of wish mine was a LOT louder even with 6 qty 1/2" holes in the bottom of the mid on each side and the inner liner out and the prop surfacing. Sounds like a regular old motor to me .

Yea, if your religious about keeping it clean it'll look nice alot longer. Just those minerals that burn out of the water are a pain in the butt to keep clean...but you can do it with a little elbow grease like you said.

The bottom of My exhaust plate is drilled AND it's louder indeed. On Idle though, it,s quiet as a rat soooo sad.

Haha you guys are a laugh, if I could shut the exhaust up more I would! I reckon the best noise these engines make comes from the induction when you boot it
