sst 120 motors
Are these motors 2.0 litre's? What kind of power do they make and what rpms are they turning them?

Thanks for the info. I know these were used with the small racing gearcases. Would this powerhead work on a motor with a 1.87 gearcase, or would it load up to bad.

just gotta prop for it to turn 8+
to keep it happy
being a 2.0 they don't have lots of torque
are 120s are peppy high rev motors

The SST-120 class has been around since about 1977. The earlier models ran stock 175 power heads. The current 122 cu inch models are stripped down 150 power heads with a few minor changes. The #VI speedmaster lower unit allows the engine to free up and turn higher rpm. To run a big gear case would not work as well but it will work and the engines make good top end power. They're just a tad short on the low end as they were designed for use on a light weight tunnel hull. I think the weight for that class is 1050 lbs with the driver.

in contrair,,,
the "current " sst120 motor
which has been out of production since 2007
when they made their last run of blocks
was its own motor from racing division from 1991
yes it was a 2.5 cased 2.0 cast sleeve in it
but,,,,,,
had its own porting
sst piston are different than production
unpainted block with 260 ex divider
high performance heads
260 racing ignition and flywheel
cross ported intake with plastic reeds
wh 46 racing carbs
left turn for the speedmaster
as stated does not like to be lugged from the smaller cubes and porting
2.1 gearcase would be better than 1,86
but if prop it right on smaller diuameter
will do fine,,,just don't want to lug it
as the higher comp and port timing will make heat

…and that powerhead was used on the European XR2 as well. An untouched factory engine gave just short of 200hp.

Like I said, Basically a 122 cu inch 150 with some changes, now in a fat block with dowel pin heads as on the 2.5 design But nothing exotic as on the S-3000 which is an entirely different casting. SST-120 as in SUPER STOCK TUNNEL 120 which started in late 1976 off a basic fishing motor design and has evolved to what it is today...Still basically a 120 cu inch fishing motor with some changes..

yea ur right,,,,
just like a 2.5 260 is
basically a 2.5 200
just with changes
but still not the same motors

Not at all. A 260 is an entirely different engine...nikasil sleeves different casting. Forged top pin pistons and much more. The 120 shares many part designs wth a stock 150 as engineered. The 260 does not share anywhere near as many interchangable parts not to mention it is a crank case injected EFI engine. You're tryig to compare apples with oranges.

Don't forget about the 2.0 liter mod u motors they were horn EFI and turned 10grand but had no bottom end torque
