There's a triangle shape opening in the block under the poppet, it's where the water exits. There needs to be a matching opening in the cowl plate, frequently the 260 plate will not have the opening, so by using that plate you've plugged the poppet. Somewhere I have a photo, I'll see if I can round it up.

This is an Alien plate, but the relief hole is the same, need to be sure that hole is there.

Had the same problem with a promax power head and 4 hole CLE and 260 plate. Had a small hole where the poppet dumps. Opened it up to the triangle size. Made no difference. Tried everything else. None of it worked. 35+ PSI at WOT. Finally said screw it and ran a 7/16" drill bit into the 2 piece adapter water dump passage into the mid and opened up the 4 coolant holes that spray the tuner to 1/8" . Those two mods dropped terminal pressure to 20-25 lbs at 80+ MPH and didnt affect the idle pressure at all.

I'm running a 2 piece as well. Problem being that the 2 piece dump hole that the poppet feeds isnt big enough to release all the water the low water pickup is feeding it. The pump is really doing nothing at high speed. Its the ram effect of the water entering the system that is feeding the motor cold pressurized water. The poppet can be wide open but with too small of a dump port the pressure stays high. You'll find the same thing.

Opened up the cowl plate, fixed the issue. A big THANK YOU to Transomstand for the insight.

Question, what temp should I see this motor running at? Getting 125 on gauge, not sure I trust it. Running 8 lbs water pressure at idle, 18 at WOT. Seems to be working great. This board is great, knowledgeable folks.

    Actually........I asked the bunny

Pressure is fine, temp a little low, but your water is getting cooler too. The dash gauges we use ain't exactly aerospace quality and can have a pretty substantial error, best to confirm with a temp gun.
