Awesome video of offshore 115hp SOB racing.. UIM 3A/3B World Championships

A few weeks ago we hosted the UIM 3A/3B World Championships in our home waters of Guernsey. We're a small island between England and France with only 60,000 inhabitants, but we have a very rich powerboating history and some of the best offshore conditions in the world. We used to host a round of the Class One championships back in the 80s and 90s, and our club is looking to host more international events in the future.

For those of you unaware of the class structures, 3A is monohull only, length between 5.75 and 7m, and a maximum width of 1.95m (which is why the bats have their wings clipped). 3B is a mix of catamarans and monos of between 5 and 6.8m, with no restrictions on width. Both classes must run 'green' 115hp motors, and the only permitted modifications are to the mounts, steering system and water pickups. There is a mix of 115HO E-TEC, 115 Pro XS Mercs, and F115 Yamahas. The Powerheads must remain 100% stock. The 3B cats will run 80mph + in perfect conditions. In this particular championship the A class was quicker though, as they're much better in rough water.

My friend Tom put together this 5 minute edit of the week, featuring some spectacular racing footage and Guernsey scenery from a helicopter, GoPro footage from some of the boats including mine, and shots of the pits and week in general. If you like boats you'll like this video I hope!

That was the Swedish girls, Veronica and Kristina in their 20ft Twister Cat. Veronica cracked 3 ribs, but was out again in practice the next day, and tried to race 2 days afterwards! They're built tough!

Great video. Looks like a fun class. They should have something like that in the Great Lakes region.

Nope! There were 3 heats with 2 classes, and Merc only won 1. Evinrude won 3, and Yamaha 2. Overall classifications in A Class had Evinrude 1st & 2nd, Merc 3rd. B Class was won by a Yam with Evinrude 2nd & 3rd.

3 Mercurys had snapped mounting brackets or swivels during the week... Some of the swedes have run back to back tests on the same boat, and say the Merc is 0.5-1mph in flat water, but the E-TEC has more torque and mid range. The Merc gearcase holds up better at very high heights, but the saddles and swivels are a major weakness.

The Yam powered boat in B. Class would be the slowest of the lot in flat water, but he's an exceptional rough water driver in a very capable hull, and thoroughly deserved his world title.

i had electrical issues all week, starting with losing trim on the 3rd lap of the first heat, but luckily it stuck 'in' and I managed 3rd place... Got 6th overall which I was happy with in the circumstances!

It was a brilliant week, although it was seriously hard work. I'm looking forward to next season!

    Cool Wow!

Absolutly excellent perspective from your part of the globe!!! Fantastic speeds from that amount power, unherd of in the past, 80 mph from 115 hp. was that the twister in blue that went for a tumble with the 2 Sweedish girls in the, above and below water sequence? Very nice, would like to make it to your part of the world some day, perhaps you could give some sightseeing tips, fun out

Yep it was the girls that had the spill in the Twister. They're not scared of giving it some! The part where they flipped was the calmest part of the lap and they were trying to make up the ground they lost in the really rough part. Highest speed seen on the GPS trackers we all had fitted was 65mph I believe, it was a bit too lumpy for the cats to stretch their legs with a calm water setup. Speeds in the very rough legs were rarely over 50!

if you ever find yourself here I'll give you a tour!
