knock/detonation sensor
Is there a way to detect detonation/preignition without having an engine management computer?
Maybe a sensor that goes in the head and activates a light on the dash or something?
Surely they're is something for outboards because I cannot for the life of me see how anyone would hear it like we do in a car, and by the time you hear it the damage could be done anyway.

This is where I would start: http://www.knocklite.com/
You need to supply an appropriate knock sensor probe (preferably one tuned to the bore size of your engine) but that's not hard; Im thinking the stock Merc unit might even work but haven't looked into that yet.

Everything you need in a a box. Don't know if they work or not but they seem to have no problems in car engines.

OK then, I'll let you know how it works in a couple days... I just ordered mine.
I've been eyeing them for years and the reviews were mainly positive but I never pulled the trigger because I didn't really need one... but if they stopped making them then I need at least one (maybe a couple) before they're all gone.

Or not... I guess:
This item no longer exists, would you like a full refund?

One of the issues you will run into is that detonation is too fast to signal a light or buzzer if you are going strictly off the knock sensor output. Sure you can wire it similar to the way you set up a peak hold multimeter and have the horn or light go off and keep going off once you get the first hint of detonation but that doesnt tell you how many detonation hits youve gotten and it doesnt do anything about the root problem of having the detonation in the first place. I know theres a general aversion to having "black boxes" on these motors but knock sensors have been around for years and the technology is pretty good.

The Knocklite was a "smart" sensor that could distinguish between "light" and "severe" detonation and it's sensitivity varied with rpm. But you're talking about using it for "engine protection" and I'm talking about using it for tuning compression, timing, octane, and jetting. Then hook up the factory detonation box for engine protection.
