Merc guys- 115 Tower of power rod cap bolt head size

Guys, have a 115 with #1 and #2 cylinders needing some work...and new pistons/rings. Problem is, the rod cap bolts. 12 pt, but much smaller than a 5/16". The F6 on the head...6mm 12pt?

A 7mm 6pt comes close (but of course won't work). The cap bolt is Merc P/N 91012. Thanks for the help!!

That bolt head appears to be stripped. It's a 12 point 1/4". Those bolts were made long before an idiot from Georgia was elected President and decided that metrics would be a good idea. So around here we refer to Jimmy Carter as the father of the double tool set (among other less flattering descriptions).

Would recommend a good socket, like Snap On rather than a hardware store special. Snap on has a 12 point shallow well 1/4" socket that's 3/8 drive that's perfect for inline rod bolts.

Maybe you'll get lucky and get that one out with vice grips if the last person in it didn't locktite the bolts, otherwise maybe cutting a screw driver slot in it with a thin cut off wheel may get it.

Thanks Race. No, not stripped, in fact the flutes are in excellent condition on all 12 bolts. Now to find a socket that's not gonna run me $20 to remove and re-install 4 bolts...

If $20 saves you $200, or more, it might be worth it.
