    Rotten 25 Liberator

Originally when i talked to the owner of a 25 liberator tunnel hull he wanted some coolers made, baffle boards for some speakers, and a few other things. I visited him to take a look at the boat, when i arrived we looked at the boat and the cover had been partially taken off and it had rained. The carpet in it was wet, i pointed out the fact that it was not good for the carpet to be soaked like it was. After a few days he contacted me and told me that his first concern was to get all the wet carpet out and gelcoat and nonskid all the area that the carpet was. So a few weeks later he brought me the boat. The boat was supposedly stored indoors and dry for the most of its life, it came from Texas and apparently wasnt used much. So i was being optimistic and hoping that it was dry for the most part, but i did tell the owner "bucket of worms". So i ripped out the carpet and started to locate soft spots in the floor. Long story short, the whole floor and all the bulkheads under the deck were rotten as they could be. The main problem, NOT MARINE GRADE PLYWOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! They screwed everything in over the carpet, the underside of the wood was really poorly glassed if at all in some places. The openings for the tank access were cut out and not sealed at all. Just a really bad job. The transom is wet and leaking brown water out of the scupper holes, motor mount holes, and rub rail, so its going to come out too. As it sits now its gutted and the motors just came off, going to rip out the transom next and start a rebuild. Sad part is the boat is only 7 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!!!!! I spoke to another member on here and he had the exact problem with the same year and same boat. I called the owner of Liberator and he assured me that "We know what were doing now"! So if you have a 2007 25' Liberator (skater copy), you may want to take a close look at it. This guy was riding around in a 100++ MPH cardboard box. Pics to come when I get a chance. It'll be rebuilt with all composite. There is balsa core in it, i will inspect it and make sure its good. It appears to be in good shape. The glass work on the hull and cap seem to be good, but the deck, transom and bulkheads were so far from right its very sad.

I have had a similar situation with a rally sport bought out of florida and supposably stored indoors and driven by an old lady only on sundays in fresh water!
    Please post pics.
7 years is not very long to have that happen. The big boat manufacturers cover that type of stuff for 5 years.

Wow! That's really bad for a seven year old boat. A lot of people complain about the higher price of Skaters, there is a difference.

No kidding, imagine having to call the owner and tell him about his new baby (he only had it less than 6 months). He uses it every weekend. Id rather have to call and tell him i ran over his dog.

Sorry for the randomness of the pics. The only wood left is a small piece up under the bow where the "cabin" was. I cut 3.5 inches in from the tunnel to make sure it was dry clean wood and glassed over the edges. Most of the wood on the tunnel was still dry and stuck good. I really didnt want to have to try to remove it from up under the bow. If it ever rots ill deal with it then.

I called the owner of Liberator and he assured me that "We know what were doing now"!

    Sounds like an expensive gamble.

    Bingo!

Not just the Skater copies either. Splashes in general.
If it sounds too good to be true.................

At resale you are also reminded of why it was cheaper than the real deal.

A friend once told me, "you can put lip stick on a pig but it's still a pig".

Glad they think they know what they're doing at Liberator cuz that 7 yr old POS would sure indicate otherwise and is tough to dispute.
Looks like a one yr old Eagle One that a friend who no longer posts here used to own Pretty sure they know what they're doing too, or so we've been told.
Wow. Too bad for the owner!!
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

POS? Now now. the actual lamination of the hull and cap are good, it's the wood and deck that were done so poorly. that's why at my shop we discourage the use of wood in boats unless it's insisted on. don't get me wrong "properly" sealed and glassed marine wood will last a long time. but how often is it done right?
