Does that cleaner have acid in it ? Problem is they etch the gel and make micro pores that the acid desolves. Very effective tho. I remember cleaning my dads hulls after sitting in the water at the cabin dock. 26 ft chapparel with twin 454's. What a pain in the azz it can be. Yours cleaned up nice by the way.

X 2 for "On and Off" cleaner. Works great. Yes, its an acid. Which does not harm gelcoat. Trailers are another story.

Its fact that acid DOES harm gel coat. Im not saying dont use it but its been proven thru macro imaging. It turns the surface from smooth to rough and porous and can resemble a sponge.

Well, I'm paying about $8.50 a gal. vs. $25 plus a gal. to do the same thing, yes there's acid in there, you ain't going to touch those stains with out it, haven't looked at it under a microscope but, after cleaning, it's as smooth as a babies bottom.

Can you provide a source for this? Acid does not react with plastic/gel/fiberglass. If it did it wouldn't just harm a micro layer of the surface, it would continue to destroy. This is why its sold in plastic containers.
Been using The Works for years. Its a very mild oxcalic acid.

I've always "heard" that repeated use of an acid based cleaner would harm the gel on a boat. I've also "heard" of repeated use making the stains show up stronger and harder to remove. I'm not sure if any of this is true just what I have "heard". With that being said, is there a good none or low acidic cleaner that works just as well?

This is the 4th year I've been keeping it in the water and I usually take it out every 3-4 weeks and clean it, I hate that anti-fouling paint on "trailer boats" , I swear if you would see this hull in person you would never know it spends 6 mos. a year in the water, although the outdrive is starting to get some corrosion.

I use the Works toilet bowl cleaner and it's active ingredient is Hydrogen Chloride which is the same as On Off bottom cleaner. The difference is the bottom cleaner is thicker so it does not run off as quick.

I do not think it is fair to come out and say this will damage the gell coat when it is the same active chemical.
I would caution though, do not use this on the tile grout in your bathroom. It is safe on your fiberglass though.
