I agree 100%. I have a bud with a very nice GS/250XS that has never hooked. Then again i doubt it has ever been over 60mph either. He bought as a cruiser and thats what he does with it. Also it probly gets the best fuel mileage i`ve ever seen from an outboard.

Have been running these non ratcheting cases for four years with several mishaps and a few hooks that has scared the crap out of my passengers and myself on occasion ... Just something that you have to learn too do and really be ready every time too wheel that boat straight... good luck and be safe with your seat time.

I've blown my old cmate out probably 20 times and mildly hooked it a couple. I don't think there's a boat made that will hook as hard as an Allison. I'm fully aware that they'll hook with a ratcheting case also, but they're even more likely to do it with a non-ratcheting case imo. I'm probably not the right owner for an Allison, too aggressive with set-ups trying to find more speed. I love the boats otherwise. Oh, unfortunately, your not going to steer out of an Allison that's going to hook.

As stated above you're not going to steer out an Allison that's going into a hook. I don't think they ever mildly hook.

I have to ask is this problem primarily with gs' s I have had my 88 xr 02 up to 80 several times and it feels just rock solid. Ratcheting case about 1/4 below pad. Or have just been lucky.

I'm not an Allison expert and not really familiar with the 02's, but that sounds like a very safe setup to me.
If I keep GS, a good bit of the .090 lip will be removed, maybe all of it along with a ratcheting gcase. I know a lot of people will not agree, but I'd have to make it more like a normal boat! I think the stock lip is great for low power running 80 or less, not 100+. JMO

Ok, let me get this straight. You put a 3.0 litre with a non racheting gearcase on a GS. The manufacturer has warnings about this and you still do it. Boat hooks just like manufacturer say's it would and it's the boats fault. lol .... I have a GS with a 280SS on it that I can drive one handed at 95 mph. I've even chopped the throttle more than once @ 100 and it never did anything. So you think it could be you and your setup and not the boat. I've been over 105 numerous times with no issue(this is with the windshield on cause I don't like all the wind buffeting). Put a 280SS and call it a day (I don't even have a trim gauge in the boat). I've never had this boat hook or give a signal that it was ever going to hook. Setup right these boats are very easy and fun to drive. I can basically toss it around and drive it by a "point and shoot" type of driving style.... JMO...

Yes, you got it straight. My 225 pm ran 96.7 in the heat and drove fine also. Driving it is no big deal. What im saying is this, imo it would make the boat safer with less lip and a ratcheting case with the 3.0. Congratulations, you can sit in a boat, give it gas and go over 100. Never thought that was some new breakthrough?

One more thing, I never said it was the boats fault, get your shxx straight first. If you don't like what I did with putting the 3.0 on it... I really don't care... Fair enough?

I hooked my SS once at 98 when I first got it. Over trim was my problem, it didn't like any thing past level. After the hook I thought about trimming my pad. There were a lot of Alli owners that said it would help. I resisted and was glad I did. I have had 2 Allisons and the first thing I asked before driving to look at them was "has the pad been messed with. With a little work on the sporty and motor heights I never hooked it again. It would run 111 with a 280. Their is a good chance that if you are on the pad and have a failure it will come around ratchet or not. Good luck and be safe.

Stop kidding yourself or ask around. The GS is the most prone Allison to hook. You might need to start respecting yours or we'll be reading about you. Just remember you are not in control. A lot of other variable dictate whether or not you make it back to the dock.
