Grandsport hooked hard right slowing down with 3.0!!
I'll be first to say I went into this 3.0 project knowing the risk of the non-ratcheting gearcase on the 3.0's. I took the GS out for a second time this past Wed. and after several passes it took a hard right while slowing down in the 75-80 range. Violent puts in mildly!!! I had my helmet and vest on, but still managed to suffer a AC Separation to my left shoulder. I feel lucky that the boat didn't barrel roll. So... after my initial feelings of the 3.0 being positive, things have changed somewhat. If I keep the boat and 3.0, it will NOT be driven until the Sportmaster is changed to a ratcheting case... Period.. I just wanted to get this out there so no one else hurts themselves or worse. Sean

Glad it was not worse, do you know for sure it was the gearcase or did you chop the throttle, or maybe to much negative trim. I have been thinking about a 3.0 also.

I never chop the throttle on any boat, but i'm sure i didn't let it slow down enough. With that said, i'd tend to agree on driver error, but, with the non-ratcheting case it makes things way too touchy on these A-boats. If the bow finds it's way down too quickly, things get ugly quick!

The ratcheting shift dog is built as a one way clutch,
The non ratcheting gears are square cut dogs,
The gear dogs with ramps allow the prop to freewheel when power is cut be it by driving style or engine failure.Regards,

Yes my buddy has a 3.0l on one and I'm pretty sure it does not have a ratcheting case on it, sport master with fleet master internals I believe. Sure is quite a ride when it hooks, which it hasn't done since he got the set up better and has some seat time. I can tell you I honestly don't really like the boat, not sure what the attraction is to something that drives like its on marbles and is going to toss you out if it gets the chance! Not hating on Allison's and call me a pussy if you like but not the boat for me. he just went down from 10" to 7.5" set back, it has to help I'm thinking but he hasn't tried it yet. Glad you lived to tell about it!

Sell the hull and buy an SRV or a Triad. Hope you heal up fast!

Thanks guys, I do love everything else about the boat, obviously, it's the nature of the beast. They are great boats, but i've lost some of the LOVE after it tried to KILL me. I do take the blame for it, I knew what could happen prior to doing this, just not at that moment!

Glad your ok. I would have thought by the time you were down in the 75-80 range it would have been more forgiving.

Man be careful out there. You have a hundred mile an hour boat with your stream. That GS needs to be a family ride. Just cruising down the river lookin good. Glad you are ok . Their used to be a guy on here named jr in jax he can tell you everthing that boat will do (good or bad) he hangs out at black creek a lot. Down at reedneck beach. Be safe see ya out soon.

they have such sharp angles, streams and actions have more flowing lines and seem to recover a tad bit looser when thrown into a direction.

Yea, high dead rise angle in the front and back of the hull is what does it. That's the main reason Allison's ride better than most other light 20' boats. Always a trade off though.
