Another Merc to Johnson prop question
Trying to install a merc chopper on a Johnson. I know I can drill the front side of the splines out with a 1 inch whole saw until it hits the thrust washer. Once I do that it looks like I will have a lot of shaft showing were the prop nut goes. Will that be ok???

There are two different castle nuts I have had , one is wider, and you can use a spacer or washers behind it. how far off are you from the cotter pin going through the castle nut?

Use a splined spacer.

So doesn't matter how much of the shaft is showing at the prop nut side and long as there spacer to lock the nut down?

Use an omc or yamaha spline washer/spacer as said above.

Sometimes I have 3/8+" showing. Never had a problem. There are also different sizes of thrust washers in front of the prop. I have a collection of both for different props.

For my buddies boat he uses a combination of OMC spacers and the Merc tab spacer depending on the prop and how much space there is.

You might have to mill off the weed cutters, I had to for my chopper.

Thanks for the replies guys. Does anyone have a pic of a splined spacer? Are the weed cutters the 3 taps on the front of the prop and can I remove them myself with a cut off wheel?
