You may or may not know this already?...racer/marine dealer Jan Schoonover in Lima, Ohio(Lima Marine Center) produced the Dutchman tunnels in the late 60's & early 70's. He raced various Switzers/Dutchmans at the time. His namesakes were called the "Flying Dutchman". He held 7 World Speed Records, all with Mercury power. Jan passed away of a heart attack, at his home, in January 2012, in Billings Montana. He enjoyed teaching & producing leather crafts in his later years, and became a world renowned leather artist. Jan had quite a interesting life. In his younger years, he built & tested Scuba equipment, before getting into building boats. He also designed/manufactured neon signs, while at the same time, working in a plant producing guided missiles for the military. Owned a Guest Ranch for years & guided hunters in Cody, Wyoming. Was a Sales Manager for the National Motor Club & a Manager at Tandy Leather Products, out of Texas. It will take some time digging here on S & F, but there are some decent photos & a bit of history on the boats themselves.

Fujimo- thanks for the info. I have most of that at this time. Trying to see if anyone has a brochure on these hulls as I have one for my next project in about 2 years..
BTW Jan gave up boat racing after his bad accident , sold everything and quit in 1969...

I see on the brochure that Schoonover also built a version of the wing. The picture of one running looks to me like it may be at Parker. Were these wings successful and how many were built? Down here in South Florida the only wings I ever remember seeing were Switzers. I knew a couple of people who ran Dutchmans with twins and they all suffered from what came to be called the "Dutchman stumble". They would be running aired out then suddenly drop the nose with no warning.

The same thing bedeviled the aluminum Petty Craft hulls from right down the road in Wapakoneta, Ohio. One of the twins stumbled so badly at a race in Elyria that it nosed in, pitch poled, and wound up flying upside down and backwards. When it re-entered the water tore the big transverse tank out and killed the driver...

The Dutchman UU-00 in the photo that was loaned to someone in South Florida spawned a copy called "Fantom". UU-0 in the photo was one of the first twins made and had the "Dutchman Stumble" problem (shown in crash photo). Both the twin and the single made poor race boats, and only a few were made for racing. I tried with UU-0 but it was turned back to a pleasure boat after a few races..

I have ridden in two of the dutchmen hulls. One had a 2.4 225hp merc with nitrous. It damn near killed the owner. Scared me bad, rode it once! The other had a stock 150 IL6 and it was a fun boat that would pull skiers and blast around in the ruff salt water we have here. Loved that one....
