You may bought it as an early 80`s motor and it still can be. You never know what parts have been changed through the years. The serial number you provided LA sleeve could have been 85-87. The humped exaust cover can be from a 235hp or the later 175 X-flow when OMC was plating around with hp numbers. So you see you can both be right.

I may be feeding my Evinrude the wrong fuel but it runs great (now). 1987 110hp (no vro, mix myself)
Feed her 90 oct nonethanol, 50:1 oil

Another suggestion is to run synthetic oil and champion spark plugs both of these made a diff in mine!
1984 17vee Bullet w/1985 Johnson 150gt (bob's nose cone, hydrodynamics custom 8in. jackplate, custom skid plate and foil, and 26p trophy plus) currently 70mph tournament loaded.
