Kind of dated, but still one of my favorite video's . It takes some serious torque to squawk a 12" hoop in all three gears. Yes three cogs in the space that the factory housed five. Why ? Well I'd have to say they needed to be massive to handle the torque load .. and I didnt hear it fall on it's face anywhere from zero to a buck ninety five , so no sense in using more...
It takes aprox 500 HP to make a 600 pound package run those numbers. High gear is 1:1 So it isnt to hard to convert a 9000 rpm shaft speed into a 1.87 : 1 V- drive and a beloved 34" prop to have a 300 drag on steroids ...

Yep but that ends up close to a good v6 outboard with 100ftlbs missing
How much go in a turbo v8 busa, that might bridge the gap..

For me this is just a cool discussion about could be done to do something completely different.
Chaz, Tom Perry who runs a top fuel drag bike is a friend of mine and lives close by. I also helped design and build a Pro Mod bike back in the lat 90's. It could have been a very competitive bike but the owner kind of gave up on it. Bill Hahn senior built the hydraulic trans/shifting system that was most complicated thing to operate you could imagine! I think it eventually went to a guy who ran it in top gas.
My favorite classes have always been pro-mod and funnybike.

Motorcycle transmission are pretty simple and there are conversions out there for 3 speeds etc. for drag racing. You could even have a clutch for around the dock.
What could really be impressive would be twins. Think about 800hp/500 in a 400 pound package maybe driving one prop. No avantage really over a bad ass small block but it would be killer cool.

These are the things that keep me awake at night. If I had only become a potato farmer.....

In case you missed it .. he did say a transmission and a V drive .. all hypothetical of course ..

Ok so a no torque 500 hp motor at 9000 rpm makes 292 lbs/ft .

A 300 hp motor at the same rpm makes 175 .

Now if you mean "low speed torque" ...

The 300 hp motor makes 150 hp and still makes 175 lbs/ft at 4500 rpm

The 500 hp motor at 4500 makes 75 hp and 88 lbs/ft at 4500 rpm

So there's the 100 lbs/ft your talking about . The outboard has a power curve that is flat and linear . ( I cant help but think that with whats out there today that a 600 hp outboard is entirely possible )

Back to the trans model ... most three speeds like the one in the funnybike above has a 1.9 / 1.45 / 1:1 spread ..
Low gear at 4500 would would be 167 lbs/ft and 555 at 9K .. I think at that point I would forget the 1.87 lower end reduction and just spin a small prop at crank speed ..

For those that just have to have a "high gear only bike motor" ... here's ya go ..

I cant even put into words how much I admire the talents of guys like Byron Hines , Jack O'Malley , Mike Murdock , Mike Gray , Elmer Trett , Sam Wills , Bill Hahn and many others .. who paved the way . The guys today , are no less serious .. they just have more money to buy space shuttle technology ..

...every year here in Dickinson Texas they have a get together for folks to "Clean the Bayou". Big dumpsters are at our local boat launch for the trash and logs the participants bring in. This year there was a guy that showed up with an all beat to heck 20' aluminum boat that was powered by an old Harley Panhead. Boat would scoot for sure and that sound when she ran was like music!!

This..... VGT VVT Direct injection and a computer that tunes it 1 million times a second seems like a par for the course these days.

A rather knowledgeable fella told me yrs ago that if Yamaha Racing designed a 3.3L 2 stroke from scratch, 900hp is in reach

Just need to do the bmep calc to see if its in reach.
Problem with an outboard is the cylinders are too close together so the porting suffers.
The old 500cc v4 gp bike engines almost have a cylinder spacing between each cylinder.
Etec skidoo engine, big horsepower but much freer to design it with that application

Elmer Trent signed a shirt for me about a half hour before he died making his last pass. I still have it. Never been worn.

Agreed , the make these things as compact as possible guys won the design contest over the power and efficiency brokers ..
