    Anyone been to Cuba lately

I'm starting to think about a vacation next year. Wife wants to do an all inclusive Riviera Maya thing but I'm trying to talk her into Cuba. I don't really know anyone who's gone there recently to any of the tourist hotels. They look nice and seem to be a bargain but I get the feeling they might be like some of the hokey hotels Iv'e stayed at back in Russia, East Germany or Yugoslavia. Anyone been there recently? Sure I'd have to fly out of Canada but Vancouver is not too far from here.

Haven't been there, but spoken to quite a few people who have.

The main thing to be aware of is that the food sucks beyond imagination.

Also, the place has an oppressive communist regime, which might be another reason not to go there...

When I was younger I spent a lot of time travelling in Eastern Europe before and just after the fall of communism. My wife from St Petersburg is a product of that wanderlust. I always found the communist regimes a bit entertaining. Lots of people going through the motions but hardly anyone buying the party lines.

The food. Now that is a problem.

I belive you can fly from the Bahamas, it's supposed to be beautiful water there, as far as food I'm sure it depends on where you go, I have a friend who just got his whole family here from there, took about 15 yrs. they are fine people and I'm sure they eat well.

I'm in the northwest. Canada is close by and flying out of Vancouver isnt an issue. My hurdle now is talking my wife into it and she is not very receptive at this point. Calling her stubborn would be a bit of an understatement so I have a bit of a challenge.

I'm sure there's a reason my friend left with his family, his parents are still there. I talked with a fellow once who took his trawler there, said he told the authorities he was visiting the catholic church, didn't have much to say about luxuries. to me, unless it's a bucket list deal, there are much friendlier places to enjoy, Dominican republic is where all the bigshots from our government are hanging out from what I hear, the Clintons, Charlie Rangle and others

I don't care about their politics nor do I care to work there or live there. They have some very nice hotels set up on the coast to cater primarily to European and Canadian tourists.

If youve never been to a stable communist country you owe it to yourself to go. I managed to make ti to the Soviet Union, East Germany, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia before European communism ended. It was surreal. Wouldnt want to live there but visiting was a blast. Like going to another planet where the rules are all different. After the Castros are gone I dont think it will take more than a few years before the casinos open up in Havana again. I'd love to see it before the McDonald's open up.
