VMAX 225 Series 2 losing gearcase oil?

My 09 VMAX 225 series 2 180hrs, is about a half quart low when i check the level in the gearcase. just as a normal check i look for milky oil, check propshaft, & check oil level. Never seen any external leak or milky oil.
Any ideas on where the oil is going?

I have a 05 250 that was doing the same thing. It turned out to the seal below the water pump was going bad. Mine was pulling the oil up from the water pump. Hope this helps.

I have also heard if you are using synthetic Amsoil it has been known to expand and push out thru the seals. High performance Yami or mercury won't do that due to having different properties.

What oil have you been using ?

Try mixing half amsiol and half Yami or Merc gear oils, maybe you will have a slicker mix that won't lose oil ...?

Amsoil is a great oil but not for the LU. Like mentioned it has a high expansion rate and will also foam up bad if water gets introduced.
I would stick with Mercury or Yamaha LU oil only.
You may also drain a shot glass once it reaches your full level. Better to run a bit low than a bit high, not good for seal pressure.

Mercury's new race lube cuts down even more on foaming and expansion.

Interesting, I've been using Amsoil l/u oil for 25 years, omc, merc, and now my yamaha. Never had any leakage/expansion/foamy issues at all. But I just installed a HPDI lower on my motor, used, history unknown, that I haven't put any new seals in, and I'm seeing the same thing. Steady oil loss without any evidence of a leak! I'm going to re-seal it over the winter and see what happens next year. If it still has unexplained oil loss I'll switch it out for different fluid and monitor it.
