After reviewing things a bit and a message from Norris, this is what could have happened to Robby, and I have lifted his ban.
I fully accept the responsibility for it, and of course I do make mistakes. As many of you see, spammers are a massive problem for this site because of its size and traffic. We are a very big, tempting target, and controlling them is very tough.

The banning of multiple spammers requires a manual approach - there are no automated features in place to deal with spammers other than the registration countermeasures we have. I would not trust anything automatic to remove spammers anyway, since something like that could certainly take action on a false target.
