Hydrofoils
Love my SE Sport 300 hydrofoil. It is effective at what it is supposed to do. It decreases time to plane, reduces ventilation (especially when trimming up for speed). If it does reduce top speed, it can't be by much. It also reduces engine noise.
There is one thing it seems to do that I don't like... my boat is a relatively deep V, and the hydrofoil seems to cause more leaning in turns.
The question is... is there a hydrofoil that would do everything the SE Sport does, without the extra leaning in turns?

None i know of. They drop you 2-5mph depending on how deep you are and the angle they run i. The water. Idealy their out of or just skimming the surface at speed. To far out and they can hook you good in a sharp turn when it reenters the water.

How about any less likely to hook in a turn?

Same. Trimming in down reduces the angle and lessons the effects some.
Only use i found for them was sking and deteming if you need bow lifting nutral or stern lifting props on a deep or normal height setup. As they will speed you up if you need bow lift not as much as good prop though.

Out of curiosity, what hull and what engine are you talking of?

I'm thinking the Allison or Bobs Machine stabilizers may not grab in corners. Anybody know?

I'd go with the Bob's, you're going to trade off some of the benefit of the larger one but a more narrow plate without "wings" should help a great deal with the turning issue.

Sounds reasonable. Maybe I'll give that a try. Thanks

I was down in New Britain yesterday picking up a car for a customer's project. Pretty much in your stomping ground.
I find it interesting that your boat does not plane out easily, rare that a Glastron has a hard time climbing out of the hole.
My CVX20 which has a 19 or 20° rise will jump on plane in 2-3 boat lengths with a 25 pitch prop. This is 1650# boat plus two people and fuel tank up front which is not much less than yours and If I am correct the bottoms of the SSV and this CVX are very similar.
Might just be with how much torque the engines produce.Regards,
Charlie North

Interesting that you were so nearby. That is just the town next to me.
Well the boat actually does plain really well even without the hydrofoil. In fact that is one of the reasons I bought it back in 1987. I liked the way it drove especially for skiing. What I notice is that the hydrofoil improves that even more, especially when weight is added in the boat. I also notice I get less engine noise into the cockpit with it, and it reduces ventilation. I’ve pulled it off a few times just to try without it again, but always keep putting it back on because on balance I like it better than without. The only thing I do not like about it is that it seems to grab in turns and makes the boat tip more.
That’s cool you have the CVX-20. Last year I picked up a second boat, its small sister the CVX-17 and redid it. It does 45 on the speedo with only 75 hp, but is rated for 140.

I had not considered noise suppression as part of the duties. Before I had my CVX it had some form of plate on it, I welded the holes up once I got it since a chunk of cave plate was broken out.
I expect I will be down your way with my boat in October for the Ct river run.Regards,
Charlie North

I have ran bob's plate on several boats. Good improvement where needed. No turning issues. No broken cav plates....

Thanks for the input Xstream. Sounds like Bobs is my direction.
Charlie, see you in October. I'll be looking for your CVX-20.
