From what I can see, cyl 3 and 5 are getting what they need but cyl 1 overheated and gripped in......

now on the Port side, there was a catastrophe to be comming because it seems that cyl 4 and 6 are on the very lean side (IMO)

Any help on this issue would be more than welcome.

I don't want to do the same thing twice.....

    Thanks.

From what I understand, you can't look at the piston tops to determine rich or lean at this stage because it is all new and during break in everything is changing while pays wear into place and adjust to the new engine. Also from what I understand the piston tops will show an erroneous pattern at this stage because at idle the cylinder temps are different than when loaded at higher rpm. Also I would think that a new piston would need to 'season' after many heat cycles for the carbon to start sticking to the surface.

None of this is 100% but just my opinion based on just having gone through a fresh break in and watching through the plug hole after every trip to the water.

This is another complete block that Jacques assembled. His original block looked like it had blown up badly they popped the bottom two sleeves welded and jb welded the webs and the water jackets and then re-installed the sleeves and looked like they had honed them with a chainsaw the chatter below the ports was brutal. I got him this new block which is a newer motor than his (very possibly the bleed system could be setup to his olds blocks configuration it was removed from the new block when we got it), The new block was a quicksilver re-man that had blown up due to undersized bores from the factory. I did not have the new block when I ordered the .030 kit we were intending to fix the original block and WSM only had .030 in stock at the time. I removed one good sleeve from his original block and installed it in the #5 hole on the new block; the original sleeve on the new block had been removed by the owner for another motor, then bored to within .008 of finish bore then honed to merc spec +/- .0005. The pistons are WSM pro series Teflon coated skirts, I have used them over and over again with no issues. I never stated they were better than forged but I prefer them over forged. I spoke with Jacques today and gave him some things to check over and he knows that I will work with him on whatever he needs to get it fixed up. I did not charge him 4500 LOL....I installed a sleeve bored and honed 6 holes, got him a replacement block, a complete rebuild kit and a set of boyesen reeds for roughly 1900$ CDN including 13% tax.

    rgds,

    Dave

I think I found what might have cause this unfortune.

On the 1997 Bleed routing, the hose going from piston No 1 to a T between piston no 3 and 5 was ''broken '' causing a lean to this piston.

I also found the hose going from top bearing to bottom bearing in the same status ( slightly broken ).

O M G....... I will use these words because the other ones will get me kicked out....

PS: here are the picture of this poor thing that suffered the lack of oil.

PS 2: still wirking on the issue as to, What cause the pistons 4 and 6 to be so '' washed out ''........ O'' rings are brand F..g new, I will gave the head ''shaved '' 2 to 3 thousands of an inche to validate that they will be straight....

Keeping the courage that is needed to have this ''3.0L '' back on track for next week If possible

    One interrogation here,

If I installed 300 heads, obvioously, the compression should be Higher but By how much.

I checked it yesterday and it average out about the same as before I took it apart ( 110 to 115 ).

I was expecting a little more.

    Jacques,

Go get some sleep! your running on 3hrs! I know I Just spent 6 hours stripping, polishing and replacing main bearings on an in-line merc crankshaft to find .005 runout on the center journal so now I get to do it all over again tomorrow on another crankshaft.

Dave, I already had a nap after this mecanic session this morning.

Thanks for taking care of my health.

But thinking of it, I will go again for another nap, my wallet is telling me so.

sometimes the sleeve does not make full contact with the sleeve holder causing hot spots on the sleeve and the piston will starts to drag where the sleeve has moved away the holder its not transferring heat it will stick it probably was not the sleeve Dave installed but it still could be the problem ive had it few times before i changed my machine shop

There are a few interrogations to my brain,

If, and I say IF the broken bleed hose leading to piston '' 1 '' could have ''leanned down '' this cylinderunder partial load, I am prepared to accept this issue, make an apology to the piston that was broken down, wipe the table and restart again.

Now If you look in front of the front half of the block, on this unit, there are ''air passages '' between each intake runners with a ''rubber bloc '' that prevent communication between them, there was one missing on the top left side (facing the engine). I will post a picture of this in the next post.

Also, I found ( OMG ) again, one piece of foam inside the piston Number 6, this foam is fron the inside of the cowl.
I will make sure that there are non left after my ''loosing control '' session this morning.

But I am still questionning myself about pistons 4 and 6 that seems to be '' Mr. Clean '' washed out. both ''O'' rings are impeccable and the head is straight as an arrow.

    Mystery
