    1986 2.4 200hp. Clunking in forward.

    Hi Everyone.

New to S&F so hope this in the right section. My 86 2.4 200hp is clunking when I put it forward. It will do it intermittently till I get over about 2500 rpm then its gone till I shifter it back in neutral. Im thinking somethings out of adjustment but not sure. Any help would be great.

    Thanks.

Maybe jumping a tooth or have a bad gear. How long has it done this? Hit anything in the water that you can remember?

It started this season. So about a month or so. No damage on the lower unit and I cant remember feeling any contacted. If it was a bad gear wouldn't I be getting some vibration either excel or decel ? Could it be a shift cable issue or clutches?

    Thanks Slimm

Check your adjustment at the engine end of the cables. Make sure it is going into fwd gear completely. Do not keep running it. Get it checked out.

Oh yeah I didn't think about the cable. .. sometimes the simplest of things get overlooked. When I first bought my Cobra it had am old cable that stretched or the end came loose on and when ever I adjusted it, it would get loose again within a couple of days. Finally installed new cables and problem solved.

As for a vibration from a chipped or broken tooth on a gear, I don't think you would feel a vibration but now that I think about it the problem might not go away after reaching a certain speed or engine rpm.

You heard correctly. With engine running both forward and reverse gears are spinning. Shift dog on prop shaft is sitting still. When you shift the dog slides on the prop shaft and locks into whichever gear you have chosen. One gear spinning clunking into one that is stationary.

I would try adjusting cable but if that don't work get it checked out before you run it again as Xstream suggested. Very expensive parts.

I start my new engine in neutral to warm it up, when I am ready to pull off trailer or head down the water I start in gear because so many people on here have told me that the higher performance engines should be done that way. I figure they know more than me so I didn't question it, just do as I am told.

Thanks guys! So if I pop off the cable on the engine side put the control in forward and the lower unit in forward and adjust the cable to the shift lever. Should that be properly adjusted or is there another procedure for this?

I think the correct way is to set the cable fully extended and use a sharpie or something to mark the inside cable where it meets the outer sheeth. Now set the cable fully withdrawn and mark the cable again where it meets. Adjust the cable halfway between these points and set the engine into neutral and adjust the cable adjustment until the cable end connects to the shifter bracket. That is assuming your engine's bracket is marked with a spot for neutral.

If it is not marked then I think i had betterluck shifting into reverse, then moving the shifter into reverse and adjusting the cable until you can attach it to the bracket. I am sure someone else may have a more simple or correct way but those are the ways that I have done mine.
