Thread: Talon 22 Outboards and Inboards

I always wonder how a smaller boat like that will deal with the differences of loaded and nearly empty fuel tanks when they are moved forward to counteract the weight hanging off the back. How far do you plan on moving them? You are obviously moving the CG forward when full, but I would think there will be very noticeable handling changes as the tanks empty. Interested to hear how this works if you end up building one with twin 300XS's and do move the tanks forward. Constants, such as batteries, would be great help. I also like the idea of access to the front.

Great points.
I remember reading about the Offshore boats running bow ballast tanks back in the day. I always assumed it was to keep from skying the bow in rough seas. One of the experts said it was but added that it was mainly because they didn't have power trim back then.
Said far fewer do it these days due to that fact although I know some still do.
Kind of a catch 22 deal on set up.
Do you do it for the guy that wants 10/10's and knows what he's doing or the recreational guy that may not understand the effects of his power trim and is scared of his trim tabs?
Often thought of this while fantasizing about splashing my old Sonics. Build it as a 90 MPH rocket that I'd want, or a 60 mph pig like the other 99% of the market would want
I remember the 21/22 (?) Talon w/twin 2.5's that used to come to the Rumble. That thing was scary at rest but I'm sure it's owner had it set up that way intentionally.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Todd, will the single be a different lay up, stringers/knees vs the twin?

The twins will have a 5 or 6 knee deal in the back versus the 4 knee set up we use now. Of course it will have the twin fuel tanks, so they will have a little heavier lay up in that area on the bottom of the sponsons and of course securing up the tanks will add a little more weight. I see about 150 more lbs of weight being added in knees and glass. My original Talon with twins only has two 1/2" knees in it. We use four 3/4" Coosa knees in the single engine configurations. Here is a pic of us playing with the twin tanks in an SS. We have them in 25 and 35 gallon tanks. They are not your traditional shaped ranks
