We need to talk about these mids you have and swivels as mine are rubbish and I can't get anything undone.

    SIT REP

Pulled the MID section off the boat from the bracket.
All the bolts and nuts for the engine mounts need to be replaced, heads have rusted away.
New Steering bracket required had to cut it with a hacksaw to get the bolts out, could save it but its rusty.
New top section (Guide exhaust according to yamaha), the exhaust manifold is all cracked an warped for some reason (I assume over heating) this will need to be replaced.
Now that I am getting to know these motors I noticed that both of them no longer have the temp sensors I guess the previous owner was having issues. This will all be fixed hopefully.
Its a heap of work but now I know that these engines will be safe and reliable from here on in.

Appears they were never flushed and washed after use in their past life.

Do you guys know any reason why I can't use a 2004 mid section to replace the late 80's version I have?
There is one available on ebay here in Australia it look reasonably tidy and is going relatively cheap.

I did a check and part numbers have changed but the bolt pattern looks the same.

The later mids and engine plate added a flush port.

There is a thread on this site that compared all types of methods of removing frozen bolts with several type products. Also there was a home brewed liquid that worked best of all if i remember correctly. It should come up with a search.

Those old Excels were very durable motors and pretty fast as well. I punished a few of them myself in marathons years back. Loved um.

I'm looking forward to the end result but I'm not enjoying the journey.

    Hi Folks

I have finally got the rebuilt 225 back on the boat. Had a few issues with power but cleaning the plugs on the loom and reseating them seems to have worked for the most part.

I have fired the old girl up but now I have a new problem. I never ran this motor before the rebuild so who know what the electronics are like. Motor has fired up but is only firing on the port bank. (HOT) Starboard bank is cool, plugs are wet but there seems to be no spark at all.

I will go and double check all the plugs again, has anybody encountered this issue before? Am I looking at a new CDI unit or something along those lines?

    Cheers
    Jason

    ITS ALIVE!!!! (well almost)

I replaced the CDI unit since the previous post which helped.

Needs some additional trouble shooting. Float levels need to be adjusted again. It still has a mis, I've replaced 2 coils which helped, I think I have a few more to go.
Its too damn hot out there now

OK all issues now resolved. Adjusted the float levels again as I made a hash of it the first time. The miss was due to 3 of the 6 bowls having no fuel.
Got to this after verifying all cylinders had spark.

Removed the carbs again and double checked all float setting again and got them all spot on, reassembled and all 6 have fuel and wouldn't you know it the engine runs sweet now.

I will load some video of running engine later.

So that was a few massive steps forward and now 1 step back, the gear box seal has started leaking. Could this be because its been lying on its side whilst disassembled and it has dried out?

Any body now how difficult they are to replace is a special tool required? May drop it in to the nearest Yamaha service centre and get them to do it.

Small video of a warm start, the old engine never fires like this when warm.

And gearbox leak seems to have stopped, better check all the oil hasn't drained out. Its due for the oil to be replaced so will get on to that next.

The seal replacement is done from the outside so no special tools or shims are needed.
Looks like you are getting close to two good engines.

Certainly getting there. I just came back in from putting the new powerhead on the new midsection. Not going to even try and split them this time.

I won't swap it out until I'm 100% happy with the Excel. I have my fair share of being towed back in and I'm not a big fan of it.

Thanks for the info, if it starts leaking again I will replace them.
