1986 Inline Issue
I thought I had a fuel problem. Run about 2 or 3 minutes at 5000+ and it would start to die, slowly. Primer bulb was soft so I replaced the entire fuel line, tank to motor. Went out today and it still happened, although I got 5 or 6 minutes and the bulb was firm this time. It didn't want to run much above idle for about 5 minutes. Then It ran good again for about five minutes. It doesn't matter how much I pump the bulb or anything, it wants about 5 minutes to go again.
Something Electronic? Stator and rectifier/regulator are about 7 or 8 years old. I think switch boxes and coils are original.
HELP!!!

check all electronics, stator , switchbox, sound like a bad trigger , but you can never be sure until you check it, also check the ball valve in the fuel tank, sometimes corrosion, or gunk will cause them to lodge.

Sounds more like a fuel issue. These electronics are fairly stable; they generally work or don't
fuel pickup sock or fuel tank vent

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. The easiest thing to elimate would be the fuel tank. Can you temporarily use a small auxiliary tank and try it. Next is the fuel delivery to the carb bowls. Have you checked the screen in the fuel pump? I think it's just a thumb screw or maybe a couple of flat heads to check it. I had an inline once with a similar issue. A brand new primer bulb/fuel line assy had a piece of plastic debris near the outlet of the bulb. Had the carbs off 6 times. Finally disconnected fuel line from carbs and squeezed ball, I could have pissed four times that much. Bulb was tight, very little fuel coming through. Just a thought. Block isn't getting hot is it? You have a temp gauge or buzzer? Good luck!

I'll try the portable tank idea. I thought if it was a vent or restriction in the line it would collapse the bulb. I had that happen a couple of years ago when I had a plugged up water separator. That is not in the line now. I'll check the pump screen and the inline filter between the pump and carbs tomorrow and try to run Wednesday.

Since my obstruction was on the "downstream" side of the bulb, no collapse. Just make sure with the fuel line pulled off the fuel pump, the bulb pumps plenty of fuel when squeezed. This should verify volume of fuel to the pump. Then likewise, you can disconnect outlet of fuel pump, squeeze bulb and look for same flow.

Okay. Checked all of the above. Screen in pump inlet is clean. Replaced inline filter between pump and carbs. New filter is larger but old one was clear. Pumped bulb and huge flow. Made sure vent to tank is clear. Disconnected at tank end and blew through it.
NOW! If whoever it is up north will turn off your fan and stop blowing this c-co-o-l-d-dd air down here, I'll get it back in the water. And you need to turn the fan blowing north to suck warm air up there and blow the cold back to Santa Claus land. Anyway. Thanks for the replies. I can always count on S&F.I carry a gun because a cop won't fit in my pocket.

I know it's Easter weekend, but you gonna get any good weather. It may be my own ignorance, but where is the "Oldest" city?

Not a lot of good weather until the middle of the week. Windy and I need no white caps. And yes, St. Augustine, FL is "The Oldest & The Most Beautiful City in The United States". Part of that is my NSHO.
Thanks all and have a wonderful Easter, The Celebration of The Most Wonderful Event EVER!!I carry a gun because a cop won't fit in my pocket.

I haven't been there since junior high school, but it is indeed a beautiful place. Happy Easter to you!

Update
Well, I went out and ran with the external tank. Went about 20 miles at 5500, a little over 8 PSI water, and ran great. Switched to main tank, new hose, bulb and clamps, and got about 3 minutes at 5200 when it started to die. Reconnected the external, ran most of the way back to the ramp and then went back to main. Again, about 3 minutes.
I guess I check the pickup in the tank next. I know the vent is clear. Checked it just last weekend. t least I know it's NOT the motor.
Thanks for the advice and listening to me.I carry a gun because a cop won't fit in my pocket.

Water? After a shake up of the tank, pump some in a clear jar and let settle. Check bottom of jar for "bubble" of water.

Didn't think of that. I bypassed the water separator filter to take as many things out of the equation as I could. It'll be a week or 2 before I get back to it but that will be my next check.
