Cut mids are like welding a skeg on it might last and might not.i like to think factory parts are the only thing I would trust on a lake boat period...

If its a 20" then why would anyone try to repair it anyway? They are plentiful and can be had for a decent price...on the other hand if it was a factory 15" then you darn right I would try to fix it. When it comes to welding "important" aluminum I only let one person do it and he is only 30 years old. He almost always used a wire gun and fixed stuff for me that other far more experienced welders tried and failed. The older folks are closer so I will always try them first...now they just look at certain stuff I bring them and say no. There are very few welders that can do a good job on this cast aluminum and make it stick well without burning it up so when you find a good one you can trust stick with him.

Come on guys,is there anyone on here that thinks that the mid that broke in half in the test tank,on the first start up,had ever been run successfully before,in that condition. If it didn't make five minutes in the test tank it sure as hell was never run with that weld,on a boat!!!! I don't know who did the weld. But I think I do,I've seen it before.

It's OBVIOUSLY not the same casting, in fact it appears to be from a bass can.
    It appears your correct.

Bass cans are plentiful I found a hairline crack in mine during my spring inspection. My mechanic said they are a dime a dozen. He installed it for $600 and said I could break up the labor part cost any way I wanted it it was mostly labor....I spent more to replace some bushings and other items while it was apart but not a lot more

welding a mid section is not inteicate by any means, its atleast 3/16 thick and in some areas over 3/8 thick material, also its cast, TIG is great for smaller objects or detail welding , but for heavy castings and plate thicknesses like a mid, a production spool gun or push pull can deposit alot more material at higher amperages and dig deeper than TIG

actually as far as aluminum wire feeder, i do disagree.. when i was a service location for miller welders a few years ago i serviced Columbia Helocopters Envision, multi process machine with a push pull system annualy for them to meet the stds set by FAA...

but regardless of process... those welds SUCK!!!!!

That's a a pretty big hit for a 2 hour job and a $150 used can.... I hope he didn't tell you he needed to pull the power head, because you don't.

I just scrapped a bass can today because it had a crack in the tail extension.
